You cannot start group calls anymore. One-to-ones work and you can even add others subsequently, but direct group calls, no. Users with up-to-date Skype (Win/Mac) get news that Linux users need upgrade (haha). FAQ says, group calls are not supported anymore with Linux (and few others).

Text-based chat has more alternatives that than there are words for snow in Inuit.

1:1 voice/video calls? There are also several other possibilities.

Calling my mum and several people I have to deal with on a professional basis and who won't really listen to alternative suggestions. :/

I know it is easier said than done but I reject the use of skype/facetime. How professional is it to use a proprietary piece of software like skype anyway? The protocols used and the terms of use can change at the whim of a large corporation. This can leave you in a lurch really quick.

At least with a network like the telephone network things are set up they way they're set up and they don't just change on a whim.

Here you barely come around a phone flatrate. These are basically also VoIP now, so you can use them from your computer. Maybe that's too oldschool though ;)

Anyway, if you need it professionally, I'd really look into a feasible alternative. Even of one on ones still work, I won't take this for granted. There was no Skype for Linux release in ages and this fact does not make its future brighter.

The people I deal with are usually normal desktop and smartphone users. For them, professional = commercial, big price. If you can call Mali or Australia with your phone, wow, great. I'm a student with a low-paying job.

Good idea. There are cool Voip solutions that have monthly plans which let you call the normal phone line. This would be a good interim solution until most people start using non-phone solutions.

Never heard of the Ring. A killer feature would be an application that is not a walled garden, but open (basically like email, phone). So, basically a protocol that anyone could speak. Brings us back to WebRTCâ€¦

I have Ring installed on my Desktop and mobile device but never used it. But it looks promising. Active development, clients for almost all operating systems, completely distributed system...

I'm still sad that audio/video calls on XMPP never become really usable. :(

talk.io is a WebRTC based service that relies on JavaScript and can leak your actual IP even from behind a VPN, so no privacy at all.

If you don't trust talky.io take any other WebRTC service or host your own. It's basically a static HTML page with some JavaScript, but Spreed worked on some more sophisticated stuff: https://github.com/strukturag/spreed-webrtc
