Working in the domain of #disinformation countering / #verification? Here's an interesting #cfp:

The #Cambridge Disinformation #Summit will convene global thought leaders to discuss research regarding the efficacy of potential interventions to mitigate the harms from disinformation. Papers will be selected for presentation at the Summit by an interdisciplinary committee.

https://www.jbs.cam.ac.uk/events/cambridge-disinformation-summit-2025/

The call is open until 25.10.24.

The summit will take place in Cambridge (UK) in April 2025.

I thought the dedicated science name was #agnotology

It would be nice to promote this name: so as people get aware

Disinformers are so skilled that it needs a new field of science to study them & their techniques

"Agnotology" was introduced by Robert N. Proctor

His research was on how industries, namely the tobacco industry, deliberately spread ignorance about the health risks of smoking to mislead the public and create doubt among scientists & policymakers

@hexehelicen Thanks for pointing that out. In the media / journo community, we usually talk about verification or disinfo-countering, or fact-checking (which describes only a part of the job, of course). The term agnotology (which probably goes back to the agnostics, i.e. those who have doubts?) seems to make a lot of sense. We'll keep it in mind and check the literature.

@hexehelicen

P.S.: It seems that the term actually goes back to ἀγνῶσις -> agnō̂sis -> without knowledge (or insight)

I am not totally versed in the field. I agree that most journalist use the words fact-checking and disinformation - that's the "former" way of explaining things

I came across the term Agnotology while being interested in the #climatescam #climatedenier trend among #farright followers, which seems to go really often hand and hand

I know more about the perpective of: "Merchants of Doubt" by N. Oreskes
