It depends on your definition of contribution, I guess. Since we have modern Olympics, we had two worlds wars, Hitler used it for propaganda, other regimes also use it for sportswashing, we have a very fragile geopolitical situation currently, so how did Olympics helped so far? I like the Games, the sports and competition, I watch it always. If it helps with world peace? It is a nice idea, but I highly doubt it and haven't seen data showing otherwise.
@irenerd this was beyond fighting, was actual genocide, forced displacement, cultural erasure, so many crimes against humanity that gives us pain only to categorize them.
Is your idea that, because Israel participated in the Olympic Games, and is currently engaged in genocide, the Olympics has had no other effect on world peace in its 130-year history?
actually I chose “Qualified yes” because I think they do contribute, just not enough for Israel stoping their carnage on civilians in Palestine. The bad is on Netanyahu.
I would say Olympics actually hurt world peace. For decades, it has been used by evils of this world as a mean of propaganda, deepening the idea of superiority over "weak westerners" or whatever way they choose to frame it. It has been used for propaganda by nazi Germany and by modern moscow, who I believe are the worst violators of global peace ever.
So, I'm a qualified yes. I think many of the goals of the Olympics are noble and international institutions, however flawed, are a necessary part of building a worldwide society. But there is a lot more to do.

in reply to Evan Prodromou • • •@irenerd oh, you mean historically, though you meant the Paris Olympics.
A strong claim states that the end of apartheid was speeded by the boycott to south Africa in the Olympics.
So, Id say it has been used as a tool to help in world peace, but this was a lost opportunity to do it so.

in reply to Evan Prodromou • • •So, this has been a really interesting question. A lot of good discussion in the comments.
I think on the surface one of the points has been to foster mutual understanding and therefore peace.
Obviously, there have been wars since 1896. The Olympic Games alone have not ushered us into an era of peace. But they have contributed.

Others note that although the goal is noble, it has ossified.
And the emphasis on nationalism and commercialism does not advance peace.
