Do people actually use trackballs in 2024?! 🖲️

If going full 80's arcade game on a timesheet is your thing, then have at it... (just keep it away from my dual mouse setup) 🖱️🖱️

I've been told by colleagues they're a "must have" when working with 3D modelling or CAD software.
in reply to Elliot

@elliot That goes perfectly with 3D model editing, for sure. Same with inkpads for 2D art and touch screens for... um, doom-scrolling.

@DodoTheDev That must be my annoyance with them, is lack of muscle memory. I mostly power through work with keyboard only for speed. (I like shortcuts and script... Lol)

When I was in the police control room, the software we used for logging calls was all keyboard accessible and I *loved* it. I could wiz around, sending jobs off quick and easy.

I find now, so much software/websites are lacking this functionality. Even "simple" tabbing from one box to another doesn't work often. It's really frustrating. I think it's why I like the sound of #emacs, but just haven't got the time to learn it properly.

I actually use it on a mini-pc I use on a TV at a distance. Works best for wireless. Running a mouse on a pad isn't very convenient sitting at a distance. (This is mostly used for really minor things. Typing, web browsing, etc etc. No gaming or anything of the sort really.)

It was also really good for my grandmother when she was still using a computer. Easier for her hands to use it seems.

Oh, if I may ask, why a dual mouse setup? I haven't seen anything that doesn't just treat them as one input device.

  1. Open a terminal and type xinput (as normal user). Look at the id of one of your mice.
  2. Then create a new master device with xinput create-master "name"
  3. Reattach one of your mice to the new master xinput reattach "mouse id" "new master id"

It's... Interesting

Back when I had a touchscreen monitor I actually would have loved this. Sadly I had to give it up. (It actually was really nice. A glass screen makes a bigger difference than you might think. Unfortunately, I needed displayport, > 60Hz and freesync, all of which it couldn't do.)

I use a thumb track ball for everything. It requires very little space and energy to use, and after getting used to it I can play FPS games. I'm not good, but I was never good with a mouse either.
in reply to CatSalad🐈🥗 (D.Burch) :blobcatrainbow:

Pretty close, but I prefer wired peripherals and don't have the extra buttons. Here's a pic of the one I use while I lay in bed, which would be a lot harder to do with a mouse.

@Alrecenk I have one basically like the ones you have pictured here, from Logitech. Honestly it took a few weeks to get used to, but my wrist pain is gone!

I still have to switch back to a traditional mouse if I play a game or try to do anything extremely precise (photoshop, etc.) but I’m a convert.

I used to have one like this that I carried in my laptop bag..... Mainly because it was tiny and was easy to just keep for those rare cases I needed a mouse in the data center but it was actually really pleasant to use if I wasn't switching between keyboard and mouse a ton.

Always wanted to make fun of it but it was so damn functional and comfortable.

I removed the ball with a pad, but before there were Trackpads I only used Trackballs.

Moving the fingers on the device is so much more convincing than moving the device on the table.

I've got an old Logitech with an eyeball sized ball, and two identical fairly recent ones with small lime sized balls. The recent ones have many buttons. They're in my computer bits bin, soo... I don't use them.

I tried the Logitech quite a while ago, just couldn't jive with it.

I used to use one with a pc connected to my TV, works great when you don't have space to use a normal mouse.

Edge case, but I have a projector pointed at the ceiling over my bed, and a wireless trackball works great for the computer connected to the projector. It just sits on the bed near my hand when in use, and is stored in the nightstand.
in reply to CatSalad🐈🥗 (D.Burch) :blobcatrainbow:

yes, both a standalone thumb trackball mouse at work and a split ergo keyboard integrated "oddball keyboard" at home
in reply to CatSalad🐈🥗 (D.Burch) :blobcatrainbow:

i use a thumbball - logi Ergo M575.

Tried the larger, finger-powered ones but they make my tendons ache really badly, really quickly.

I did try an Elecom one, it had an extra button I bound to make the ball act as scrolling, that was really cool but the rest of it was meh.

I also tried the MX Ergo, but I HATE the rubberised plastic. I yeeted my MX3 after it rotted and went sticky, not making that mistake again.

I will be trying your two mouse setup with my Wacom tablet though, or maybe a secondary left-handed mouse. Wait, can I do three cursors?

in reply to Hutch

@antonyh Oh, now you've done it! I must gather all the mice and find out just how many I can use at once... :ablobcathyper:
in reply to CatSalad🐈🥗 (D.Burch) :blobcatrainbow:

happy to report that the xinput method works so beautifully, so well I can have a separate pointer for the wacom stylus, another for finger touch on wacom (two from one device!), a mouse, a trackball.

I could have a third from the wacom bound to the eraser (the back of the pen) but that's just daft 😀

As for utility, thank you I love this. I can point n click one place and scroll another. Using a 32" display, I'd imagine it'd be amazing with an ultrawide.

All that's needed now to tidy it up is a shortcut to 'park' all the unused pointers out of the way!

in reply to CatSalad🐈🥗 (D.Burch) :blobcatrainbow:

Yeah, I'm old and the combination of a tenkeyless KB and a logitech MX ergo keeps me from having joint pain.

The narrow keyboard keeps me from overextending my shoulder, and the trackball minimizes elbow pain.

in reply to CatSalad🐈🥗 (D.Burch) :blobcatrainbow:

Of course I use a trackball. I'm too klutzy to use a mouse. I can only barely manage a trackball.

Plus I have too little space to use a mouse.

I could make changes to have space for a mouse, but unfortunately the klutziness is unchangeable.

It's so bad that when I was kid I was tested for brain damage at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. No brain damage, I'm just officially a klutz.
