Over 50,000 people support @ProPublica's investigative journalism. We're a non-profit, web-first newsroom that investigates abuses of trust in the public interest.

We're beginning our fall member drive, and I want to show how vibrant and engaged the fediverse community is. If you have the means, please consider a donation.

Good news!

The Bonn Institute has published its "Constructive AI Compass".

The 70+ pages #booklet / #PDF (available in German and English) offers lots of best practices, tools, and tips regarding the use of #AI for constructive #journalism.

It's a great (and free) resource, co-authored by our colleagues Ruben Bouwmeester and @twone2.

...and here's another event note.

Our @jospang is about to leave for #Tbilisi where he'll participate in two sessions at the "Unveil the Truth" #conference, organized by the MDF, DW Akademie, USAID, and the UN Association of Georgia (Sept. 12th & 13th). 🗓️

In a #panel, Jochen will discuss #GenAI, #journalism, and #factchecking.

In a #workshop, he'll offer insights on dealing with disturbing content, avoiding secondary trauma, and guarding #mentalhealth.

"Journalism on the Digital Frontline and the Mental Health of Investigators: Risks, Tactics, and Resources"

New paper by our @jospang – published in the Global Media Journal.

Worth your time, especially if your media job entails dealing with gruesome imagery and other disturbing content.

Since we don't have public editors to call out the press, we rely on cartoonists.

Calling all #journalism nerds: does anyone know where I can find a completed, unredacted feasibility study for an investigative piece?

I’m writing about the founding methodologies of the IRE, and received some feedback on my draft that a case study or example would help make it less abstract. The trouble is, IRE textbooks do not provide a finished example. This is true even of Paul William’s original text!

I’d like to check my work against one that actually made it to print.

"Event organizer Kelly McBride, senior vice president and chair of the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership at Poynter, said the hackathon was born out of Poynter’s desire to help journalists flex their intellectual muscles as they consider AI’s ethical implications."

"#FactChecking requires the right and ability to find #sources, read widely and interview experts who are free to speak candidly — all as part of a rigorous #methodology and process. (...) Fact-checking is part of a free press and high-quality #journalism, and it contributes to public #information and #knowledge."

From the #IFCN 's "Sarajevo Statement" – which comes at a time when free speech, transparency, and the preservation of information are under massive pressure.
