Meeting Free Software Federated Folk in Meatspace

Meeting people in person for the first time is always kind of awkward - especially if you've never seen them before, and you also happen to really respect their work. You can find yourself walking down a long road with growing anticipation of things getting real. You've never been to this Mexican restaurant before, you've never met this person, who knows what could happen?

I got to meet Chris Webber from @MediaGoblin while I was visiting San Francisco. I usually feel sort of antsy when I meet people in person for the first time., but really that all evaporated as soon as we shook hands and said hello.

Image/photo

Chris has a great personality. It was wonderful talking about our different points of view on federation, and the schools of thought that have come up surrounding different implementations. We talked for three hours about Free Software, desktop environments, project philosophies, federation concepts, and our grand hopes and dreams for things we wanted to see succeed. He even told me a good Richard Stallman story!

Image/photo

There's actually a lot of really interesting things going on in the Free Software space as of recently. Of note, GNU GUIX is under a lot of promising development, and could provide a better way forward for deploying packaged web applications, and rolling them forward or back from upgrades. To some effect, such an effort could make non-PHP open source web applications easier to package, install, and use with relatively little setup required on the user's part.

Chris invited me to an SF Free Software Users meetup called Beowulf Cluster. We all crowded into a pie shop and many different kinds of conversations came up about what we did for a living and what we were interested in. Some guys talked about QA, others discussed semantics of their favorite tools and projects.

I got to meet Asheesh Laroia from the Sandstorm team. Sandstorm is extremely interesting to me, because it is a Free stack that effectively allows you to host and launch apps like a containerized Heroku - you can also host all of it on your own hardware independently. It feels a bit like Google apps, but with a much wider selection, and everything is sandboxed. The concept of an easy turn-key service for hosting a #Diaspora pod is extremely appealing to me.

We talked a bit about packaging Diaspora for that platform - at some point, someone from their community had tried to package it. Some questions remain about how Diaspora's components work in terms of in-bound and out-bound connections, and Sandstorm is a sandboxed environment for apps that can share data with each other from inside of a host. I hope to answer their outstanding questions sometime soon to get a better idea of what would need to happen.

All in all, these moments were the highlights of my trip this time. I was super glad to have met Chris and see a real Free Software hacker in the flesh.

The importance of COMMENTING

Translated from Spanish into English. Thanks to @Diego* (diaspora-fr.org) for the original post. I've written this post to Exercise my English abilities. Generally I translate in the other sense (English/Spanish); so I request you to apologize me grammatical errors.
"If you have and apple and I have an apple, and we exchange these apples, then You and I will still each have one apple. But, if you have an Idea and I have an Idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas." George Bernard Shaw

There are several differences amongst #Diaspora and other traditional #socialnetworks. But; obviously there is one that everyone can distinguish with a simple view: the user's posts quality

Permanently, we can see/read excellent posts about many subjects: #art, #traveling, #gnulinux #freesoftware #libresoftware, #security, #privacy, etc. The list can grow and grow. However; the posts can't generate by themselves: We have this richness of stuff by the effort of #Diaspora User Community. They put on their posts their time, their work (for example, formatting text in #markdown) to publish things that like, love or interest them.

The Magic Word is #Sharing

The strength of #Diaspora belongs to its Community. The Community shines by itself, spreading light to each part of Diaspora and make us feeling it alive. Who signs up and walks its first steps on #Diaspora is reaching a environment where kindness and coolness have their realm. But Diaspora is too much. It means a way of life, almost a life philosophy. It's all about #freedom. The freedom to have the choosing power to share whatever you want with those ones you wish. And it is a fantastic thing, because this social network fills itself with interesting stuff.

The key is #interaction

Every social network commentary final purpose is the #interaction that the members make amongst them. If we are here is because we want sharing things and interact with people. When someone shares something, Diaspora gives us the tools to participate with that post. We would add it to our favorites, clicking on "#Like" (or the famous #heart if you are on mobile version), we would reshare it and our third option: we could make some comment

We need to be honest here: We made some commentary on the posts that we read/saw a few. We are not accustomed to leave comments. The many of us are clicking on "#Like" or "#Reshare" as our better option; in a mechanic way. Without know it or ignoring it, we are losing all the fun that the Diaspora social network can provide us. Of course, people have their reasons to don't leaving comments. Let's check them out.

Reasons because We don't comment

  • Because We agreed with the things what we had read.

"Why Do I need to leave some comment? When you agreed with something, it doesn't appear necessary adding more stuff, It's all said.. !!
  • Because, We didn't agree with the post content, but We didn't how to say our thoughts/opinions

I didn't want to start a discuss with people who I didn't know. Besides; Why should I say that I didn't agree with the things those I was reading? Perhaps, It could mean anyone would answer me, starting a discuss. A lot of work. My best option is to keep silence saying anything.
  • Because when sometimes I commented a post leaving my thoughts, I never received a reply (T.T)

I remember the time when I was a full time Diaspora active member, but I didn't receive any reply. So, I decided no losing time writing comments.

Why commenting is an Important thing?

Please ; watch out the following graphic:Image/photo

This summarize the thing that I want to tell you. Give a thought and receive another. It's all about creating communication, to show us amongst ourselves; and; to support/help us to ourselves. This is the core/essence of a community. I could say this is the core of all communities.

Commenting is an important thing because:

  • It creates a mutual relationship in several sensesWe feed and benefit with comments amongst us. It's a interesting thing knowing how the other people are thinking about particular matters. It's necessary to get started a communication in two both senses, and, to get that other users will answer your commentary.
  • Sharing your thoughts with others is a good way to get new relationshipsWhen you discover a publishing that you like or interest you, you will ever find to say some things on the text what you have read. Searching people whose have the same thought isn't easy, but finding people who discusses a matter on a healthy way (without trolling, for example) is really, really hard. However it is greatly pleasing, and it could give you some personal satisfaction.
  • You can know wonderful peopleThe commentaries are our first step to get started a community, I don't talk of posting activity; I am talking about the people, it is about the community that can be born around Diaspora Users. We are making a great space here to share and talk. It would be the first point to start a friendship with people who commenting and would have same interests with you. Open your mind and believe in this possibility, I said you it for experience ;)
  • You can find people who help youWith commentaries we are making the place to us, a place in where exists the possibility to have kindness and wonderful conversations. We don't have the sames thoughts or opinions. We don't need them. However, the thing that the many have is the wish to learn, teach or talk. The experience and the possibility to request help to people who live in different parts of the world, it's so cool.
  • It's a way to acknowledge the author for its work writing that post.
If you find useful the information or if you like what you had read; commenting transforms itself on a way to say "thanks" to its author and show her/him that exists someone who finds useful the information.

For this; besides publishing your own posts, you could participate on the other user posts. Comment and get started some discuss. It will make a richness commentary "rain" to two both; who comments it and- who answers it. :)

If you liked this post, please share and comment it :)

Diaspora Native WebApp Update 1.5.1

Hello folks!

I have just published an update (it might take a couple of hours to be availabe) with the folllowing changes:
  • Now the "back" button only goes back in the browsing history. Previously it also called the "exit app" function when you were on the main stream. The problem with that was that when you were, for example, in a second or third "page" of the (mobile version of the) main stream, you had no way of going back to the previous page, because the exit confirmation dialog was called.
  • The "Exit App" option from the menu will be displayed in the ActionBar whenever there is room available (so that people don't freak out when they see that they can no longer exit the app by pressing the "back" button).
  • Fixed a few unescaped characters in the FR translation.
  • Removed the warning shown when using mobile Internet because it was a little anoying.
If you like this app, please consider leaving a 5 star rating and review on Google Play, share it with your friends or make a small donation on the link below. I would really appreciate it.

@Jolla enabled official app store for ported devices running their operating system Sailfish OS. Currently #Android #smartphones like #Nexus 4, #Nexus 5 and #Xperia #Pro are running #SailfishOS pretty nicely, lot's of other devices are under work.

If you have an Android phone laying around, and some #Linux skills on device/system level, go on and join the porters. Start with reading #Jolla's HADK documentation, and visit #IRC channel sailfishos-porters to get any advice while you go. They are most helpful there!

I wrote a ste-by-step for XPeria Pro, and for other devices (>20 phones or tablets under work) already ported you can visit this merproject wiki

Hope to see this operating system running all over! The #UI has reached quite a positive word out there at least. Sailfish OS was delivered to audience 2013 running on Jolla Phone. After 14 update releases, Sailfish OS 2.0 is expected to be delivered in few weeks on Jolla Tablet. Jolla has shared that they are announcing the scale of open sourcing plans in close future, aiming to maximize #OpenSource excluding only commercial parts (proprietary device drivers, certain software bought from partners like Myriad, etc...) Looking forward to share this scale to you later.

By the way, Diaspora rocks :) some of you might know what I mean... looking forward for the #API and after that a #SailfishOS #Diaspora #app. Thanks for reading!

Diaspora merges Social Relay feature

Two years of discussion revolving around public post federation hit a new milestone yesterday, as a Pull Request by @Jason Robinson got merged into the main #Diaspora repository. The Social Relay feature will allow hosted relay servers to help the main network with sharing public contents across all pods.

A few concepts have been put together regarding how the relays work:
  • Social-Federation is a Python library that aims to abstract multiple federated social networking protocols under it. Currently it only supports the Diaspora protocol and only relevant parts of it. Fully implemented is parsing a status_message message which covers public posts.
  • Social-Relay is a Python Flask application that will aim to cover this proposal, using the social-federation library. It handles public post receiving and storing to Redis. It is currently receiving all public posts from the pod iliketoast.net.
  • Change to Diaspora deferred_dispatch worker to make public posts be sent out to a relay

Public post federation

The lack of public post federation in Diaspora is IMHO a make or break feature. The whole network is a little broken as small pods are cut of most of the posts on the network due to the way current federation works.

Here is my proposal for solving this issue, please see [wiki post here](https://wiki.diasporafoundation.org/Relay_servers_for_public_posts).

It is not a comprehensive solution that can just be implemented now. It is a high level suggestion for going forward with talking about such a feature.

#diaspora API: status

Thanks to @Kent Shikama , the current work on diaspora API progresses well and fast. Progression can be followed on the meta-issue opened here.

We're not far from a first usable proof of concept. That's why I decided to start Griaspora, a library written in Groovy to consume that diaspora API. When finished, it will allow to any Android application to interact with diaspora.

Hallo #diaspora,

erklärt mir mal was.
