FSFE Newsletter - May 2017

Daniel Pocock is the new Fellowship representative

From 10 to 24 April 2017 the #FSFE ran the ninth annual vote for a Fellowship representative to represent the FSFE's community and Fellowship in the FSFE's General Assembly. The General Assembly consists of members of the FSFE e.V. and is FSFE's legal body. It is responsible for strategic planning, budgeting, agenda-setting, exonerating, and the electing and recalling of the Executive Council and the Financial Officer. And the winner of this year's election is ... Daniel Pocock!

Daniel Pocock came first from seven candidates who ran for office, with a self-description inside our wiki page for the Fellowship Elections 2017 and by participating in public hustings. Unfortunately two different dates were announced for the hustings, but the log-file is available online for everyone who missed it.

The FSFE would like to thank Nicolas Dietrich, former Fellowship representative, for his contributions during the last two years and welcomes Daniel Pocock as a new representative. Please find Daniel's personal conclusions in his own blog.

What else have we done? Inside and Outside the FSFE

  • From 26 to 28 April, the FSFE's annual Free Software #Legal and #Licensing workshop (LLW) took place in #Barcelona, #Spain. This year we gathered 120 legal experts from all over the world to share their knowledge and experience with each other in a 3-day event that encompassed more than 35 presentations on numerous legal issues, from open data to tooling, software patents and existing challenges for Free Software licensing.
  • Armijn Hemel and Shane Coughlan, members of the FSFE Legal Team, published a guide for #startups, small businesses, and engineers on "Practical GPL compliance". The guide is designed to demystify #GPL compliance and to facilitate the work of compliance engineers on a practical level.
  • North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populated state, is having general elections on 14 May 2017. The FSFE joined a "coalition of Free knowledge" which has developed for the first time a "Digital-o-Mat". The "Digital-o-Mat" is a tool to help those voters who are concerned about digital rights and freedoms, to decide about which party to vote for during these elections. Eight questions guide users to choose their own preferences on important topics about digital society - for example questions about the use of Free Software, Open Data or Open Educational Resources. After filling them out, users will see which party matches best with their own preferences and they can additionally browse detailed explanations on the party's positions regarding each topic. The interface for North-Rhine Westphalia is in German, the underlying Software however is Free Software and free to adopt for other purposes.
  • On the FSFE's Planet, we had an interesting dialogue popping up between our executive director Jonas Öberg who argues that sometimes you can use proprietary software to further free and open source software although you should be aware about the risk of backfiring. And Daniel Pocock, our new Fellowship representative, answered with "the risk of proprietary software" and that "no deal might be better than a bad deal", meaning that if you cannot achieve something with Free Software you should consider just doing without it.
  • Paul Hänsch, one of the FSFE's system administrators, organised the very first physical wiki caretakers meeting. The wiki caretakers are a team of volunteers who help to organise information inside the #wiki and make it easy for others to contribute.
  • Monitoring shows that in the last semester nine Italian Regions have reduced advertisement of proprietary #PDF readers on their website, and that one Region has increased its support for Free Software PDF readers.
  • The FSFE's executive director Jonas Öberg, blogs about "a new understanding of non-profit management" and uses this new understanding to analyse the FSFE's characteristics in the uses of technocracy, hierarchy, innovation and direction-orientation. Jonas closes his analytics with some thoughts about the way he would like to see the FSFE evolving.
  • The FSFE was present with booths at the Linke Medien Akademie in Berlin/Germany, at the 16th Augsburger Linux Info Tag in #Augsburg/ #Germany, FOSS North in #Göteborg/ #Sweden and #Linuxtage in #Graz/ #Austria.

Hello everybody and especially #podmin s!

@christoher@joindiaspora.com asked on the #Diaspora #Discourse instance for help, setting up a pod. Here's the text:
I help admin a FB group of 180,000 members called Psychedelics and Philosophy. We're developing our external website, which I would like to include Diaspora as our social network, and I've had a tough go of it. Like a week or two working with dockers, automated install scripts, two or three flavors of linux via the official wiki, and nada.

I see that your community has also moved to Discourse. I hope I can get some help setting this up. I'm interested in using our Discourse forum in conjunction with Diaspora and another piece of software rounding out what should be a useful package of open source, security oriented, anonymity and encryption enabled suite of sites for niche communities such as ours.

I'll keep an eye on my email, in hopes of a response. Thank you.

Anyone willing to #help?

Help installing a pod?

#Question to #Diaspora:

What's the best way to link to another posting?

The URL of my last posting that's shown to me is: * https://pod.geraspora.de/posts/6264651 while from a different pod (e.g. cryptospra) it looks * https://cryptospora.net/posts/1723761

I recently learned that each post or comment gets a "guid" which can be obtained by adding ".json" at the end of the URL. The different numbers at the end of the links above can be replaced by it and will still work: * https://pod.geraspora.de/posts/3dd36cd01209013582064860008dbc6c * https://cryptospora.net/posts/3dd36cd01209013582064860008dbc6c

Though, I guess this will not work on pods that haven't received this posting yet, will it?

In that mentioned post, I tried referring to another posting with:
[public records system](./posts/42e20870e4b90134d8e90242ac110007)
which works for me but not on another pod (there will be another "posts/" added) and this will also not translate to a link in the wordpress plug-in as the "http" is missing.

I could just use the full URL of the pod I'm on but this would not allow readers from other pods to act (like, reshare, comment) on the post I am referring to.

Is there a perfect way to do it?

The news that #Greenland's public records system (./posts/42e20870e...

The news that #Greenland's public records system (./posts/42e20870e4b90134d8e90242ac110007) will be Free Software is already tow months old, but I haven't had the chance to congratulate #FSFE Fellow @Carsten Agger and his company for getting the contract (http://blogs.fsfe.org/agger/2017/03/14/building-greenlands-data-infrastructure-as-free-software/)!

The federation new design is live!

Hey everyone! My work on the-federation website redesign is done. It's the first step to offer a better vision of our beloved social network. It was a pleasure to work with @Jason Robinson on this project. If you find any bug please report it on github.

This new website brings new features, including a responsive design, a page for each project ( #diaspora, #friendica and #hubzilla) and for each node! This means you now have a list of nodes for each project, and charts for project (like users, posts... only for diaspora* for example). You also have new charts with interesting ratios, and (very) improved performance (no more freeze for you, #firefox).

Among the new features you can expect in future improvements will be versions information (how many pods, how many users are up-to-date). If you have any feedback please share!

#dandelion announcement

GitHub | Translate (posted by @gsantner)

Thanks for your feedback on the previous post regarding app download source. The results are obvious - 100% of votes for F-Droid. Well, we expected a high percentage for F-Droid, but this is very clear.

Image/photo

Based on the results:
  • We won't publish releases of dandelion* signed by our key anymore
  • We will wait for F-Droid to build dandelion* and attach the app signed by them to our GitHub page
  • This way there will be just one signing key used - for you users - this means you can update your dandelion* installation regardless if downloaded from us, or from F-Droid store
  • If you download an *.apk telling a wrong key error at installation, you can be sure it's not done by F-Droid - so don't install
  • In the last versions, there was an "secondlion*" apk attached on our GitHub Release page. This one has a different package id and can be installed beside dandelion*. In future updates this won't serve the only purpose - to just allow a second account - anymore. secondlion* will be our dandelion*-fresh/beta version from now on, signed by us, which can be installed alongside dandelion*.
  • This will affect all future releases - we won't update or change previous releases
  • It's up to you - you can go for the F-Droid release, the faster published secondlion* - or install both
Does this mean the project is dead?Absolutely not.

What if my current installation came from the GitHub page?Just uninstall the app, and install the latest build from F-Droid:https://f-droid.org/repo/com.github.dfa.diaspora_android_12.apk

Who has access to future used signing keys
  • dandelion*: Just F-Droid has access to the key
  • secondlion*: Maintainers (@gsantner, @vanitasvitae)

Support the project

  • Leave us a star on GitHub
  • Provide Translations
  • Send some Bitcoin to keep us motivated - contact us
  • Report or fix bugs, send PR's

A call for contributors

Hello, folks!

Sorry for not making updates for long now. I’ll make a big update post after a while with all the news.

Recently we discussed the limited resources of the core team. It is possible to reduce load on the core team by taking some jobs. If there are someone who is ready to do continuous volunteer participation, you may help! Just to begin with something, I want to ask if there is someone who wants to test “Mentions in comments backend changes” PR6818. This is not a simple task. In order to do that you have to bring up diaspora* development environment and try to find bugs, try to find edge cases, try to break it. Then you provide a feedback. If you do this well, then the core team can dedicate less resources into that themselves and thus it’ll speed up diaspora* development speed.

I think that it makes sense to start if you’re ready to participate around 10 hours per week to this. But if you do, you may be quite useful for diaspora project in future. If anyone is intersted, send me a note!

Last year, diaspora* had a nice assembly on the #32c3 and we're going to continue our meeting point this year! This time, we especially invite developers and users from other social networks as well since we had a lot of fun last year and we did some great collaboration with developers from other networks.

If you visit the #33c3 and you plan on attending the assembly, that is, staying there for longer periods of time, please create an account in the 33c3 wiki and add yourself as a member: https://events.ccc.de/congress/2016/wiki/Assembly:Diaspora - This is very important, we need to know how many people there will be!

It may get heated sometimes, but at least on Diaspora* we still talk to each other

The more we click, like and share stuff that resonates with our own world views the more Facebook feeds us with similar posts. This has progressively divided the political narrative into two distinct filter bubbles – one for conservatives and one for liberals (a blue feed and a red feed), pulling further and further apart in the run-up to election day. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/nov/10/facebook-fake-news-election-conspiracy-theories #Facebook #Diaspora #SocialMedia #Bubbling #politics #OpenSociety

Facebook’s failure: did fake news and polarized politics get Trump elected?

The company is being accused of abdicating its responsibility to clamp down on fake news stories and counter the echo chamber that defined this election

#Help us to update DiasporaForAndroids #translations for the upcoming release!

We're soon releasing the new version of #DiasporaForAndroid on #FDroid (link). Unfortunately not all #languages are fully translated yet. You can help us change that! Take a look at our crowdin project site and check, whether your language needs some love :) Can't find your language at all? No problem. Just let us (@gsantner and me) know, so we can add it to the list!

The following languages are incomplete at the moment: - #Dutch - #Kannada - #Malayalam - #Polish - #Portuguese, Brazilian - #Russian - #Spanish

#French, #German, #Italian, #Japanese are completed. Huge thanks to the contributors :)

We'll leave you with some #preview pictures of the new version ;) Resharing welcome ;) #DiasporaForAndroid #Diaspora #DiasporaAndroid #Diaspora-for-Android #DiasporaApp #mobile #app #translator #free-software #contribute

FOSDEM 2017 - Accepted developer rooms

I see there is a "Decentralized internet" room for the first time, great news! Anyone from #Diaspora, #Friendica, #Hubzilla, #GNUSocial, #Pumpio, #Mediagoblin or other #decentralized social network project peeps planning to submit talks? Doesn't look like the call for proposals is out yet for this room. Will be sure to spend some time in this room in any case.

@MediaGoblin (Christopher) - maybe a good chance to push out #ActivityPub if you're planning to attend this year, hmm?

I've just tested #xmpp #chat between two different pods #sechat and #joindiaspora using mobile integration #telepathy on #SailfishOS. Receiving an IM from @podmin@joindiaspora.com directly to my Messages app on my #Jolla Phone with a nice notification sound was just

awesome!!

diaspora* security release 0.5.7.1

We just released diaspora* version 0.5.7.1 which disables post fetching for relayables. Due to an insecure implementation, fetching of root posts for relayables could allow an attacker to distribute malicious/spoofed/modified posts for any person.

Disabling the fetching will make the current federation a bit less reliable, but for a hotfix, this is the best solution. We will re-enable the fetching in 0.6.0.0 when we moved out the federation into its own library and are able to implement further validation during fetches.

Updating

Please update as soon as possible. Update instructions are available as usual in the wiki.

#diaspora #despora #crowdfunding #finanzierung

Dedicated *Diaspora pod server in Belgium

Hi all,

I'm looking for some partners who would be willing to help setting up a dedicated *Diaspora server in Belgium. This could be for instance at All2All or another ethical non-profit hosting company, and in the partnership with organisations active in the critical field of art and technology e.g. art schools, hackerspaces, imal, constant, f/lat etc.. There could be some crowdfunding-campaign for this which would also give the project more visibility, and more users..

Anyone interested in joining for a little working group? @Pierre Huyghebaert @xuv @olm_e@framasphere.org @Colm O'Neill @nik gaffney @Lundi @Jerry Galle @hrwn@framasphere.org
