Tobias Diekershoff, FSFE’s System Hacker and core developer of the Friendica project, along with Michael Vogel, also a core member of the Friendica development team, provide an concise introduction to Friendica in this talk.

Friendica has been part of the Fediverse since 2010, building bridges between Laconica and Diaspora*, making it one of the oldest active projects of the Fediverse - yet Friendica has flown under the radar most of the time.

In this talk we will give a short introduction to Friendica, its unique features and how it differs from other systems.

I’ve been playing with #Friendica, running in web mobile mode with #Bookface UI.

If this app ever gets a dedicated mobile client, it’s likely to become the next breakout #SocialWeb platform. It really does offer most of what you want in a #Facebook-like service.

Events? It has that. Groups? It has that too. The only thing that’s actually missing is a marketplace feature. However, someone could probably build that too.

However, once a mobile app is made, I have no doubt we’ll see lots of adoption.

is there a way to change locally the profile picture displayed of a contact?
Haven't seen any option to that regard in the contact page.

I'm asking in part specifically because of the #eyeContact issues some people have. It's about the fact that they have real problems facing full face pictures that kinda "look straight at you", actually a known psychological effect not only in primates.
(Just stare consistently at a dog and you'll see. Well actually better you don't, unless you know what you are doing)

At the same time that's probably not the only reason a avatar could be unwanted for someone. So, optional I could think of or a standard feature that disallows the display of a avatar or a feature that allows to replace the avatar picture with something chosen by the user.

when i click on my home page 🏛️ I notice that my browser takes about 10 seconds to load the post content , sometimes it doesn't even load the Friendica icon , I have to click the refresh button 1 or 2 times,

Before I used to embed videos via #nextcloud, and it worked fine. But then I edited the posts by removing the embedded video from nextcloud and uploading it to friendica and embedding it as an attachment, everything else works very fast . Some suggestions... please

Learning question and a call for action:
Why do people say that the #friendica user interface #UI as seen from a standard laptop desktop, in other words a working station screen, isn't a pleasant experience?

This looks like serious stuff to me, like a #newsPaper outlet similiar to #NYtimes or #ZEIT.

• The page background, seen here on this server as a big center #copyLeftFleur is modifiable.
• The logo kind footer as weel.
• A simple text field for the main header of the page, like in this case [common ground | CC-BY-SA-NC] fits nicely.

Can somebody please #enshittify this #KISS a littel bit, wasting time, attention and selfconfidence of the coder community!

all of a sudden my notifier tasks is stuck on the little timer icon, but in the logs it shows done, and I have no errors, im not sure if this a bug, a issue or just a fluke, Friendica 'Interrupted Fern' 2025.02-dev - 1576 what ever is the problem is also preventing my instance/profile from fully federating, I cant get any new posts of my profile in any rss/atom feed reader at all, this just started and I am clueless as to what happened and where to look as there are no errors logged anywhere, and workerqueue shows jobs as done when they are completed, so I am really at a loss, and would like to fix this asap.

here are my current worker settings per admin/site/worker

I have dug through every file and the entire database and can not find what is causing this, I can see new posts from other people on other federated instances, I can see my posts, but they are not showing up in my feed reader, indicating they are either not completed tasks or not getting federated, I have been all over this, for hours today and no errors no logs showing any issues at all, yet I clearly have an issue, as you can see the Notifier Task is showing Pending instead of being Checked as done, Help would be greatly appreciated.

I have even tired dropping back to stable, and that still did not work, so I went back to Friendica 'Interrupted Fern' 2025.02-dev - 1576 I really wish I could figure out what is going on, sure would like to have this working as its really my only form of communication with the world

So I updated my php to 8.4.2, but that has not made any difference, and I cant go backwards, as I have something else on the same server that cant go down in versions, I have dug more and more, and have found nothing that is causing this issue, having some kind of idea where to look would be helpful, considering I have done everything imaginable to solve the Notifier Tasks Pending problem of hangging and have yet to find a solution, so I have tried to think outside the box and find a solution that does not include debugging, checking error logs, confirming config files, and assuming the database is correct and healthy, find another way to address this issue, and I am hitting a brick wall.

so now I just did git reset --hard origin/develop, and the problem is still there. 🙁

I have even created a test user on my instance, and verified it is instance wide.

@Georgiana Brummell First of all, I've just noticed that you seem to not have joined the Friendica support forum yet. As far as I know, you can't post to a Friendica group/forum without fully connecting to it first.

As for the accessibility issues: To most people, it appears like Friendica has only just been made since they haven't heard of it before mid-January. But actually, Friendica is from 2010. And its frontend is largely stuck in the early 2010s, including technologically.

Friendica has always been a spare-time hobbyist project. It was mostly developed by one single man for almost two years. That guy is a protocol designer and not a frontend developer. Also, I think Friendica never had more than two regular developers, and it definitely never had any developer who really knows how to make a modern and appealing user interface. I mean, you've obviously never seen Friendica's user interface, but let me tell you that it's quite old-fashioned. It's just meant to do its job.

Hobbyist, spare-time developers of such an extremely niche piece of software who are not trained in Web UI design normally don't know a thing about accessibility. And truly, they don't care. If the UI covers all features, and the users don't have to SSH or telnet onto the Web server to use it, it's often good enough.

Friendica's regularly active user community has never been more than maybe a few thousand at a time, maybe even only a few hundred, as opposed to the over two million at which Mastodon has topped out. Thus, Friendica has never encountered blind or visually-impaired users yet.

You can see it all over the place. Alt-text is not part of Friendica's culture. Some Friendica veterans staunchly refuse to describe their media because they think alt-text is another Mastodon fad that Mastodon fundamentalists want to force upon the whole rest of the Fediverse with Mastodon's entire culture. Alt-text, to them, is like limiting your posts to 500 characters.

All this is why nobody has noticed yet that Friendica is not accessible at all.

I've got a suspicion that Friendica can only be made fully accessible by throwing the entire Web frontend away, developing an entirely new one from scratch and then also making all-new themes for it.

Also, it's only natural that TweeseCake doesn't support many of Friendica's features. As it looks to me, TweeseCake's Fediverse side is built against Mastodon and only Mastodon. If Mastodon doesn't have a feature, TweeseCake doesn't cover it either. Thus, TweeseCake probably only covers about 20% of Friendica's features because Mastodon doesn't have the other 80%.

I tried to post this to the Friendica support forum, but it kept timing out when I entered my information. I am now attempting to subscribe to their e-mail list. However, I thought I would write this here so that those who know coding, etc. might be able to offer a solution, or at least, to pass this on to the developers.

I joined Friendica in October of 2024, when Facebook decided to shut down their Basic Mobile site (not app). I am totally blind, and their main page is a nightmare to use with a screen readre (NVDA in my case). I chose Friendica because of the huge character limit, the ability to edit and delete posts, local posting, extensive profiles with keywords, and the ability to connect with all sorts of accounts in the Fediverse. For the most part, I am enjoying my time here. However, I am noticing a lot of inaccessibility on the Friendica page. I am not a programmer, but I'm guessing this is at the core of the software and is not due to the instance I'm using (friendica.world). I am also guessing that the page is not written in HTML5 and does not follow WCAG guidelines, though I may be wrong about that. If not, I strongly urge the developers to review them and implement them if possible. If so, perhaps, some changes can still be made that would make this a more screen reader-friendly site. Note that I tried this with Firefox and Supermium (a direct fork of Chrome).

Mostly, I use TweeseCake to access the site, but there are some things I can't do with that client. All of the following refer to the site itself.

1. There is a list of links at the top of the page that acts like a menu. This causes many problems while trying to perform basic tasks, particularly editing posts and handling notifications. I can't always activate said links/menu either.

1A. I can't stress how frustrating editing posts is. It sometimes takes over ten minutes. The "edit" option is a link/menu, and it can only be found via another menu. Once I finally find and activate it, I hear the sound indicating that I have entered focus Mode. Usually, this means that I am in an edit box and can type. However, in this case, I am taken back to the main page, as if I never entered the option to edit my post. Using e to try to find an edit box doesn't help, as it just sends me to the replies to different comments. So I am forced to find the post, and start all over again. The only way I can do this successfully is to try to tab through the links/menu at the top of the page (when it works), then through other posts, until, finally, I am placed in an edit box where I can type.

1B. When I go to the Notifications" link, I have to tab to "Mark all System Notifications as Seen". This isn't even a regular link, as I can't copy and paste the text from it. Once I tab to and out of that, I can then read my notifications. But here is what I have to do if I want to see follow requests.
1. Try to get the notifications link to work, then click on it.
2. Tab to marking notifications.
3. Perform a search for the word follow.
4. Click on the link of the notification that someone wants to follow me. I open this in a new window, to try to keep the original one available.
5. Make my choice as to whether to approve that notification, then close that window.
6. Return to the main window. Only now, I am not where I left off. Instead, I am placed back at the beginning of the page and the Notifications menu is not open.
7. Repeat steps 1 through 3.
Ideally, I should be able to go to a normal notifications link, perform steps 3 through 5, then return back to the link, and perform steps 3 through 5 again, as many times as necessary, without having to repeat 1 through 3.

1. I can't just go to the site and enter an edit box to post. I must go through a menu to find the link to do so. Yet there is an edit box for searching for content, tags, etc.
2. Some pinned posts don't always read properly. I can see my name, when I posted, that it's pinned, a public message, tags (if applicable), buttons for resharing, etc., and the number of comments. But I cannot simply read the post itself. ""Comments" is also a button, not a link. Even when I expand them, I still can't see my post, and finding the button again to close them takes a lot of time, as posts also have their own buttons. Note that unpinned posts are read properly.
3. While the process of editing my profile is completely accessible, finding the edit option might be slightly confusing for new users, as it requires entering yet another link/menu, this time with the user name as the title..
4. If I go to a profile of someone not on Friendica (usually Mastodon) and wish to reply to a post, after I enter my credentials, it takes me back to my profile, not to the relevant post. It only worked once.
5. The Friendica app for Windows is basically the site itself. I don't understand this at all.

To begin with @Hypolite Petovan, the original idea is to offer for example to projects like @YunoHost :neopossum_box: or @Castopod :podcasting2: a profile on forum.friendi.ca, the same way our very @Friendica Support works.
Most #fediVerse platforms have profiles on their own platform and/or a #mastodon profile, because that's the kinda standard thought and behavior. But actually to me it looks like the #friendica #communityForum page capabilities exceed by far what mastodon or others have to offer. Well, I haven't digged into the fedi clone of reddit to see if that would be an even better option. What is true tho is that forum.friendi.ca is already long standing and our community has gone a long way, so there is in general terms "no single point of failure" like in other projects that depend on one main figure and that's it.

I consider our helpers community experience here, with all the followers of our helpers page getting resend the help requests posted to the forum, chiming in to help out and solve issues, very positive. So this is a proven setup and could help lot's of other projects out here too. Actually I do think that if implemented and adopted, it even could have a positive feed back loop for friendica itself, but that's like something on another page.

So having forum.friendi.ca already up and running, why not support the fediVerse community opening our doors to those who fulfill certain basic community standards?

This server here (tupambae.org) as well is only mend to be a forum server, and of course it's doors are open for any #fediPlatform that likes to have an own forum page over here, yet somehow to me it look's like forum.friendi.ca is the first natural and ideal candidate for something like that.

Of course same goes for a #fediAdmin, #activityPub or #APIdeveloppers community support forum, if that is desired or useful.

Right now in general terms the fedi lives on using some tags or maybe some a.gup.pe addresses, but it's actually us who hold and develop that option for more than a decade now inside the federation itself.

testing around with the software #castopod, developed by @Castopod :podcasting2: .

In general terms federation with #friendica works, even integration into public forum pages and reshare by those when the castopod profile is followed by the forum page in the first place, as tested with the forum page @podCasts. As of now following from castopod profiles apparently isn't implemented. Also as of now we didn't manage to get the cron job to work at that new instalation on a shared hosting.

What is strange is that a podcast episode publication doesn't embeed the audio player so it can't be reproduced inside the post shown over here on friendica. On mastodon this works, the post displayes a video like screen and reproduces the audio file.

Not sure if this is a specific issue of this friendica instance as it is stil 2023.05 or if this is something the latest versions experience to.

The uploaded audio file was in the format m4a.

Since the author of the recent refactoring doesn't run a node themselves (which they aren't under any obligation to do), then someone™️ needs to run these changes on their own node to test them in the wild, which I'll always be grateful for.

For information only: I do run 2 test servers, but not as productive as I would like. (Server 1 -from which I post atm- runs 2024.08, server 2 runs develop branch) I will have to shut down my mastodon server in the next 3 months and my plan is to switch to #Friendica. But before that I would like to have more insight and quality in the code so I can trust it. That's why I'm heavily pushing the refactoring.

One can follow the refactoring here: https://github.com/friendica/friendica/issues/14535 And one can make sure that the refactoring shouldn't break anything. The only thing that was a BC break should be in the App class as mentioned. The logic was moved into an AppHelper and replaced DI::app() with DI::appHelper(). All official addons are adjusted. This only might break 3rd-party addons. And to solve this problem in the future I propose to add an BC promise, see https://github.com/friendica/friendica/pull/14694

tl;rd:
- The quality was improved (much less warnings)
- If one is using the App class, use the dropin-replacement using DI::appHelper()
- There should no more breaking changes, switch to develop should be unproblematic.

Man kann ja unter 'Einstellungen => Ansicht => Kanäle' definieren welche Sprachen die in den Kanälen angezeigten Beiträge haben sollen. Genauso wie in den selbst definierten Kanälen auch. Nun ist mir aber aufgefallen das diese Einstellung offenbar nicht übernommen wird. Den ich klicke auf den Button 'Einstellungen speichern' und wenn ich die Einstellungen dann noch mal aufrufe, ist meine Auswahl für die Sprachen weg. Ist das ein Bug oder verstehe ich da was falsch?

Ich habe hier auf meiner noch recht neuen Installation recht häufig Beiträge bei welchen als Herkunft wegen X abgerufen. X ist dabei ein Kontakt mit welchen ich verbunden bin und der den betreffenden Beitrag Kommentiert, möglicherweise auch geliked oder Weitergesagt hat. Das ist aber für mich nicht Sinn der Sache, zumal das meinen Stream/TL sehr voll macht und dazu führt das ich z. T. Beiträge die ich wichtig finde übersehe. Also wie kann ich das abstellen?
