To begin with @Hypolite Petovan, the original idea is to offer for example to projects like @YunoHost :neopossum_box: or @Castopod :podcasting2: a profile on forum.friendi.ca, the same way our very @Friendica Support works.
Most #fediVerse platforms have profiles on their own platform and/or a #mastodon profile, because that's the kinda standard thought and behavior. But actually to me it looks like the #friendica #communityForum page capabilities exceed by far what mastodon or others have to offer. Well, I haven't digged into the fedi clone of reddit to see if that would be an even better option. What is true tho is that forum.friendi.ca is already long standing and our community has gone a long way, so there is in general terms "no single point of failure" like in other projects that depend on one main figure and that's it.

I consider our helpers community experience here, with all the followers of our helpers page getting resend the help requests posted to the forum, chiming in to help out and solve issues, very positive. So this is a proven setup and could help lot's of other projects out here too. Actually I do think that if implemented and adopted, it even could have a positive feed back loop for friendica itself, but that's like something on another page.

So having forum.friendi.ca already up and running, why not support the fediVerse community opening our doors to those who fulfill certain basic community standards?

This server here (tupambae.org) as well is only mend to be a forum server, and of course it's doors are open for any #fediPlatform that likes to have an own forum page over here, yet somehow to me it look's like forum.friendi.ca is the first natural and ideal candidate for something like that.

Of course same goes for a #fediAdmin, #activityPub or #APIdeveloppers community support forum, if that is desired or useful.

Right now in general terms the fedi lives on using some tags or maybe some a.gup.pe addresses, but it's actually us who hold and develop that option for more than a decade now inside the federation itself.

Was that more clarifying @hypolite?

- "Defense (of the internet) (from billionaires) in depth" ( https://pluralistic.net/2025/01/23/defense-in-depth )
- "Enshittification isn't caused by venture capital" ( https://pluralistic.net/2025/01/20/capitalist-unrealism )

The 2024 IFTAS Needs Assessment Report is Here!

a cartoon depicting a group of moderators facing the viewer, many with a heart shape on their clothes
We are pleased to to announce the release of the 2024 Fediverse Trust & Safety Needs Assessment Report. This annual report is a cornerstone of our mission to support the decentralised social web with evidence-based research and actionable recommendations for moderators, community managers, and administrators.

This year’s report reflects the insights of 183 services spanning platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, and Peertube, collectively hosting over 4.3 million accounts. This year we also heard from volunteer independent moderators on Bluesky. By analysing the experiences and feedback of these moderators and admins across the Fediverse, the report highlights the challenges and opportunities within this rapidly evolving ecosystem.

We will follow up with an analysis of what we’ve seen change since last year’s report, as well as key resources we think can help solve some of the needs identified.

Key Findings

  • Resource gaps – only 16% of communities have 24-hour moderator coverage, and nearly half of moderator teams lack formal guidance. That said, we see roughly one moderator for every 1,200 active accounts.
  • Top ranked priorities – moderators need tools for CSAM detection, spam prevention, and legal guidance for compliance with regulations like GDPR.
  • Burnout is a persistent issue – one in five moderators report experiencing trauma or burnout this year, underlining the need for wellness and resilience resources.
  • Financial struggles – most communities operate on donations, and overall our survey participants are not generating enough money to cover costs. Very few moderators are receiving any compensation for their labour.

IFTAS Initiatives

Informed by last year’s findings, IFTAS has developed several solutions and programs, including a Fediverse CSAM scanner, a comprehensive Moderator Handbook (coming soon), and the creation of FediCheck for automated denylist management. Moving forward, we aim to expand resources for moderator wellness, launch our CSAM scanner for broader use (please register your interest), improve tooling for non-consensual image detection, and introduce new community guidelines templates.

We encourage everyone in the Fediverse community to read the full report for a deeper understanding of the challenges facing decentralised moderation and the innovative solutions underway.

Was cool wäre: eine Erweiterung des #ActivityPub um echte Hyperlinks im Text.

So könnte mein Bloggen komplett im #Fediverse aufgehen.

Besides WordPress and Ghost, are there any other #ActivityPub implementations that send out an Article type rather than a Note?

#fedidev

The Social Web Foundation launched today. This non-profit is dedicated to making connections between social platforms with ActivityPub, and was co-founded by @evan @mallory and @tomcoates.

The foundation's focus is educating the public and policy makers about the social web, enhancing and extending the ActivityPub protocol, and building tools and plumbing to make the social web easier to use. “With this program, The Social Web Foundation can catalyze more growth on the Fediverse while improving user experience and safety,” says Prodromou. “Our goal is to unblock users, developers and communities so they can get the most out of their social web experience.”

We are proud to support the work of the foundation. Read more about the it here:

SWF logo
We are excited to celebrate the launch of the Social Web Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to advancing the open, interconnected web through the ActivityPub protocol. At IFTAS, we believe in fostering transparency, innovation, and safety within social platforms, and the formation of SWF is a major step toward that goal.

The Social Web Foundation brings together leaders from the Fediverse, with its mission grounded in educating users, improving social web infrastructure, and enhancing user experience across independent platforms. Under the guidance of leaders like Evan Prodromou (Research Director), Mallory Knodel (Executive Director) and Tom Coates (Product Director), the foundation aims to catalyse innovation while ensuring user autonomy and safety. Already working on end-to-end encryption, GDPR guidance, a Fediverse starter pack and more, the Foundation has plenty of amazing activities lined up.

ActivityPub has enabled thousands of platforms to communicate seamlessly across the Fediverse. This framework encourages a healthier online experience by supporting diversity of thought and content while redistributing governance back to the communities that can best serve their members. In an era where centralised networks dominate, the SWF’s commitment to open standards represents a renewed opportunity for a democratic and inclusive web.

At IFTAS, we share this vision of a safer and more equitable online world. That’s why we are happy to announce that Jaz-Michael King, our Executive Director, is joining the Social Web Foundation as an Advisor. His work at IFTAS has always centred on building safer digital spaces, and this partnership aligns perfectly with our mutual commitment to civil discourse and privacy protection.

The Social Web Foundation’s work is crucial for the future of independent social platforms, and we at IFTAS look forward to collaborating in this endeavour to build a robust, inclusive, and harm-free digital landscape. As Jaz has emphasised, “The opportunities to enhance trust and safety across the Fediverse are immense, and we are eager to work closely with SWF to make this vision a reality.”

Together, we are working to redefine the social web, ensuring that it is not only open but also safe for everyone.

For more information on the Social Web Foundation and its upcoming initiatives, visit socialwebfoundation.org or follow on Fedi using @swf@socialwebfoundation.org.

got it. Thank you for sharing!

Just one point, isn't AT Protocol open source?

I just sent the final proofs of the #ActivityPub book to the editors at O'Reilly.

I'm done; with this part, at least.

I am not sure what I'm going to do with all that surplus time. I should probably start a huge new project!

“This document is dedicated to all citizens of planet Earth. You deserve freedom of communication; we hope we have contributed in some part, however small, towards that goal and right.” —The #ActivityPub Specification (2019)

Is an ID change also a `Move` but under the same domain? Can #Mastodon, #Pixelfed and others handle that, even if the URL stays the same?

I am somehow surprised that the actual Brazilian government still doesn't have an instance of some software compatible with activity pub.

Before leaving Brazil, I was part of a group engaged in open government data and civic hacking. I really hope these groups are still strong as they were a few years ago!

By the way, in 2011, I was advocating the City Council of São Paulo to have an identi.ca server, instead of Twitter. This didn't work, but at least I could open up some government data.

Your favorite social network could make decisions that make it impossible to use the service where you live. If that happens, you lose not only access to the site but, more importantly, the community you worked so hard to build.

Use platforms that implement open social web protocols like #ActivityPub so you can lift your network to another platform without missing a beat.

Your network shouldn't be trapped with the whims of a corporation. There's a better way.

Hello fediverse!

I need your help to feature all of the amazing services that are part of the #ActivityPub realm.

What are some of your favorite ActivityPub handles to follow on #Funkwhale, #Peertube, #Pixelfed, #Bookwyrm, #Wordpress, #Truefans, #Castopod, #Akkoma, #Friendica, #Lemmy and others?

Your replies will be categorized by @jejord, @AileenLalor, @miaq and @marci so that we can feature these accounts to our Flipboard users and work to ensure they render properly on Flipboard.

I'm excited to help evangelize the many great projects here and advocate for their adoption and funding.

I'm thrilled to be part of the Fediverse Files, together with @evan and @bart and hosted by @docpop ❤️

If #ActivityPub integrated #OpenStreetMap it would be an huge benefit to the #opensource #community 🌍🌎. Imagine wanting to see a place on openstreetmap and user photos appear (like google earth) or geolocate a photo or video on socials that supports ActivityPub. The possibilities are huge and would involve more people.

I tweaked the #ActivityPub inbox endpoints of my #WordPress site a bit and was able to follow my blog on #Flipboard ❤️

Just starting to wrap my head around the Fediverse and ActivityPub (and I like what I'm learning and discovering), but now here comes Nostr. For a regular user who has no deep technical knowledge, I can only hope they're interoperable. I think people will reach the fatigue of constantly setting up shop on every new technology that comes up.

To me the ultimate interoperability is if we could move around with our content (not just the follow lists). That kind of portability and freedom. Is that even possible? Too much to ask?

Hello fediverse!

This morning we shipped an exciting new version of #Flipboard that enables *anyone* on Flipboard to follow *anyone* in the fediverse.

This is the culmination of a ton of work to deeply integrate #ActivityPub into the product. The result is incredibly seamless.

Just tap on the search icon in Flipboard and tap the follow button for anyone featured there or that you find in search. You’ll soon start seeing their posts in all of your relevant Flipboard feeds.

Check the screenshots below and read this post to learn more:

Based on our decision in the last #SocialCG meeting, I set up a new GitHub repository for the #ActivityPub HTML Discovery Task Force.

I added what I think are some of the most important tasks and user stories. I hope others contribute, too!

We're back in the circular reasoning since JSON-LD *has* a well-defined data model. It's RDF and graph-based (Chapt 10. JSON-LD 1.1 spec.). The statement that AP uses "JSON-LD" but is not an RDF data model doesn't make sense to me given how JSON-LD is specified. I don't think JSON-LD provides much extensibility benefit to plain JSON apps. Maybe there should be a variant of #ActivityPub that is unambiguously plain JSON with a plain JSON extensibility design? Maybe less confusing for devs?

I'm still not clear about the discussion we had yesterday. @evan are AS2 (and #ActivityPub) serializations JSON-LD or not? I see the AS2 spec says the serialization only has "“compatibility with JSON-LD” but must conform to JSON-LD algorithm requirements. I understand if it's JSON-LD, it is also JSON (but not necessarily the inverse). Like we discussed yesterday, JSON-LD is JSON and it's an RDF data model. JSON, in general, is neither JSON-LD nor an RDF data model.

"The inbox stream contains all activities received by the actor." (#ActivityPub Rec). However, AP/AS2 collections (including "special" ones like Inbox, Outbox, Followers, etc.) do not contain Objects or Activities. They contain URI *references*. That's why one Create/Note can be referenced by many inboxes. It may look like Collections contain Objects because of typical server JSON-LD serialization, but don't be fooled. It makes a difference for data lifecycle management and storage models.

I enjoyed this talk by @rwg from IETF about the standardization of #activitypub.

https://youtu.be/Pu3hGjjQzQM?si=7bmAvTEpJvfz1yHM&t=5317

I know #ActivityPub is NOT about #followers vs #following but I made this program to show who you may have missed in your lists.

https://github.com/MPAQ-Admin/follow/

@jessamyn right on, thanks so much for watching! I'm a big fan of RSS (in case you couldn't tell) and thinking of #ActivityPub as a two-way version of #RSS really helped me wrap my ahead around it.

If any developers enjoyed our interview and would like to learn more about building social apps in the #fediverse, I highly recommend @evan's new book on #ActivityPub (published by @OReillyMedia). More info here https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/activitypub/9781098162733/
