One significant way Mastodon and the Fediverse have transformed digital culture is through the use of alt text. When I look back at my older images online and in my blogs, I rarely included alt text - even though I actively work on accessibility. For some reason, I simply overlooked it.

Now, every time I post something online, I take a moment to write alt text. Mastodon has changed my mindset, and I believe its impact extends far beyond this. The Fediverse encourages a level of consideration for others that no other social networking platform has before.

For some, joining Mastodon might seem risky because "the server could shut down at any time" or because it's managed by a single administrator. While these concerns are understandable, Mastodon has far more safeguards in place compared to centralized platforms:

1. Admins are typically experienced sysadmins with a strong passion for server management.

2. It's generally recommended to have multiple admins (we have four).

3. Many servers have financial plans in place, such as donation systems. We have my company backing things up.

4. Infrastructure is often cost-effective, keeping operating costs low.

A few additional points to consider:

1. No server - or anything in life - is immortal. That's exactly why I chose the name mementomori.social (the stoic phrase "memento mori" means "remember death").

2. Web services come and go, but longevity is possible. My first website has been online continuously for 27 years (since 1998). While I've migrated servers a few times, the site itself has never gone offline. It will most likely happen after I pass away, but I hope my descendants keep it online.

Unlike centralized platforms - especially newer ones - that rely on user growth and profitability, investors can pull the plug at any time.

The decentralized Fediverse operates differently: sysadmins are committed to keeping their servers online and do so out of dedication, not for monetary gain.

I don't think we need billions of people here. I already have all the content I need, and no one can keep up with everything anyway. The idea that social media requires a 'critical mass' is just another false narrative pushed by commercial social media corporations and their users.

I'm happy for everyone who joins the Fediverse, but for me, the value of the Social Web lies in other things - not in sheer numbers.

To begin with @Hypolite Petovan, the original idea is to offer for example to projects like @YunoHost :neopossum_box: or @Castopod :podcasting2: a profile on forum.friendi.ca, the same way our very @Friendica Support works.
Most #fediVerse platforms have profiles on their own platform and/or a #mastodon profile, because that's the kinda standard thought and behavior. But actually to me it looks like the #friendica #communityForum page capabilities exceed by far what mastodon or others have to offer. Well, I haven't digged into the fedi clone of reddit to see if that would be an even better option. What is true tho is that forum.friendi.ca is already long standing and our community has gone a long way, so there is in general terms "no single point of failure" like in other projects that depend on one main figure and that's it.

I consider our helpers community experience here, with all the followers of our helpers page getting resend the help requests posted to the forum, chiming in to help out and solve issues, very positive. So this is a proven setup and could help lot's of other projects out here too. Actually I do think that if implemented and adopted, it even could have a positive feed back loop for friendica itself, but that's like something on another page.

So having forum.friendi.ca already up and running, why not support the fediVerse community opening our doors to those who fulfill certain basic community standards?

This server here (tupambae.org) as well is only mend to be a forum server, and of course it's doors are open for any #fediPlatform that likes to have an own forum page over here, yet somehow to me it look's like forum.friendi.ca is the first natural and ideal candidate for something like that.

Of course same goes for a #fediAdmin, #activityPub or #APIdeveloppers community support forum, if that is desired or useful.

Right now in general terms the fedi lives on using some tags or maybe some a.gup.pe addresses, but it's actually us who hold and develop that option for more than a decade now inside the federation itself.

Was that more clarifying @hypolite?

Are there any #OpenSource services that would allow me to cross-post on the #Fediverse and on #Bluesky without creating a dummy account (as #Bridgy does)?

Ideally, I’m thinking about a client that supports both the #MastodonAPI and the #BlueskyAPI.

Progress on the issue :
- according to oAuth spec https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc6750#section-5.3 , the bearer access_token « SHOULD NOT be passed in page URLs (for example, as query string parameters). Instead, bearer tokens SHOULD be passed in HTTP message headers or message bodies for which confidentiality measures are taken. Browsers, web servers, and other software may not adequately secure URLs in the browser history, web server logs, and other data structures. If bearer tokens are passed in page URLs, attackers might be able to steal them from the history data, logs, or other unsecured locations. »

Friendica does this right. It looks like Mastodon wrongly accepts the token as en url argument. (Suprising, isnt ?)

I will propose a fix for SPIP plugin so it can pass the access_token in Authorization header, for both friendica, mastodon and hopefully other creatures of the fediverse.

What I'd like to see in the Fediverse or Mastodon built-in is an user controlled feed like FediAlgo. Chronological feed is nice, but I find myself using the Explore feature a lot and wanting more.
