FSFE Newsletter - May 2017

Daniel Pocock is the new Fellowship representative

From 10 to 24 April 2017 the #FSFE ran the ninth annual vote for a Fellowship representative to represent the FSFE's community and Fellowship in the FSFE's General Assembly. The General Assembly consists of members of the FSFE e.V. and is FSFE's legal body. It is responsible for strategic planning, budgeting, agenda-setting, exonerating, and the electing and recalling of the Executive Council and the Financial Officer. And the winner of this year's election is ... Daniel Pocock!

Daniel Pocock came first from seven candidates who ran for office, with a self-description inside our wiki page for the Fellowship Elections 2017 and by participating in public hustings. Unfortunately two different dates were announced for the hustings, but the log-file is available online for everyone who missed it.

The FSFE would like to thank Nicolas Dietrich, former Fellowship representative, for his contributions during the last two years and welcomes Daniel Pocock as a new representative. Please find Daniel's personal conclusions in his own blog.

What else have we done? Inside and Outside the FSFE

  • From 26 to 28 April, the FSFE's annual Free Software #Legal and #Licensing workshop (LLW) took place in #Barcelona, #Spain. This year we gathered 120 legal experts from all over the world to share their knowledge and experience with each other in a 3-day event that encompassed more than 35 presentations on numerous legal issues, from open data to tooling, software patents and existing challenges for Free Software licensing.
  • Armijn Hemel and Shane Coughlan, members of the FSFE Legal Team, published a guide for #startups, small businesses, and engineers on "Practical GPL compliance". The guide is designed to demystify #GPL compliance and to facilitate the work of compliance engineers on a practical level.
  • North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populated state, is having general elections on 14 May 2017. The FSFE joined a "coalition of Free knowledge" which has developed for the first time a "Digital-o-Mat". The "Digital-o-Mat" is a tool to help those voters who are concerned about digital rights and freedoms, to decide about which party to vote for during these elections. Eight questions guide users to choose their own preferences on important topics about digital society - for example questions about the use of Free Software, Open Data or Open Educational Resources. After filling them out, users will see which party matches best with their own preferences and they can additionally browse detailed explanations on the party's positions regarding each topic. The interface for North-Rhine Westphalia is in German, the underlying Software however is Free Software and free to adopt for other purposes.
  • On the FSFE's Planet, we had an interesting dialogue popping up between our executive director Jonas Öberg who argues that sometimes you can use proprietary software to further free and open source software although you should be aware about the risk of backfiring. And Daniel Pocock, our new Fellowship representative, answered with "the risk of proprietary software" and that "no deal might be better than a bad deal", meaning that if you cannot achieve something with Free Software you should consider just doing without it.
  • Paul Hänsch, one of the FSFE's system administrators, organised the very first physical wiki caretakers meeting. The wiki caretakers are a team of volunteers who help to organise information inside the #wiki and make it easy for others to contribute.
  • Monitoring shows that in the last semester nine Italian Regions have reduced advertisement of proprietary #PDF readers on their website, and that one Region has increased its support for Free Software PDF readers.
  • The FSFE's executive director Jonas Öberg, blogs about "a new understanding of non-profit management" and uses this new understanding to analyse the FSFE's characteristics in the uses of technocracy, hierarchy, innovation and direction-orientation. Jonas closes his analytics with some thoughts about the way he would like to see the FSFE evolving.
  • The FSFE was present with booths at the Linke Medien Akademie in Berlin/Germany, at the 16th Augsburger Linux Info Tag in #Augsburg/ #Germany, FOSS North in #Göteborg/ #Sweden and #Linuxtage in #Graz/ #Austria.

[l] Sagt euch Electron was?
Ergebnis:
out of 98 top Electron apps, they averaged 145 known Common Vulnerabilities & Exploits each due to unpached versions of Chromium :-O

Sportlich! Selbst für übliche Webapp-Sumpfbewohner-Hipstermüll-"Anwendungen".

What is the status of MediaGoblin and ActivityPub btw? Would be awesome to reuse some code between that and my federation library (https://github.com/jaywink/federation). Even crazier, implement acitivtypub there and use the library as much as possible in mediagoblin? Bonus points - federation with diaspora, friendica and hubzilla ;)

I am not a programmer but I have a #programming #Question:

How easy is it to compile Android Apps from source?

My kids are having fun learning capitals of countries recently. I remembered Quizzn which is nice for this, but the English names are often much different than German, so I want to just translate the CSV with wordpairs and compile the app again. That's it. I have no motivation to start programming Android apps and invest weeks of time to get there.

I am not a programmer. Being a #Debian user, I found AndroidTools in the wiki. This document is full of things I don't understand. Following it would entail a lot of guess work for me which minimizes the chance of succeeding.

Are you aware of any better tutorials? Or can you tell me if Quizz is below or above android-sdk-platform-23?

I welcome any hint, even "forget it!" :)

xenotropic/quizzn

quizzn - This is an open-source quiz application. The current dataset is for world capitals, but it can also be easily adapted to work with language vocabulary learning as well.

viele alte Hasen und Häsinnen haben ja schon länger und ungeduldig auf the return of the diaphoto gewartet. Jetzt ist es endlich soweit - Der Jahreswechsel scheint mir eine gute Gelegenheit für einen Neustart zu sein
Was ist diaphoto ?

Someone is putting lots of work into hacking Github developers

Might be time to stop assuming we're not targets because we're "not that interesting."
Open-source developers who use Github are in the cross-hairs of advanced malware that has steal passwords, download sensitive files, take screenshots, and self-destruct when necessary.
Dimnie, as the reconnaissance and espionage trojan is known, has largely flown under the radar for the past three years. It mostly targeted Russians until early this year, when a new campaign took aim at multiple owners of Github repositories. One commenter in this thread reported the initial infection e-mail was sent to an address that was used solely for Github, and researchers with Palo Alto Networks, the firm that reported the campaign on Tuesday, told Ars they have no evidence it targeted anyone other than Github developers.
[…]
The researchers declined to speculate who might be behind the campaign or what the motivations may be for targeting open-source developers. It's not hard to come up with plausible theories why either nation-sponsored for financially motivated hackers would want to spy on this demographic. What's clear now is that someone is devoting considerable time and expertise to make that happen.

Yes, that was asked on the mailing list as well and Moritz replied already. Now, there's a ticket for that.

#CodingTeacherPodcast is online: https://codingteacherpodcast.github.io please contribute audio files! youtu.be/RiS9OZPHJjc
The idea is to share stories and information in audio format about teaching to code. For #CodweekEU activists and for everyone interested in coding and teaching. Everything creative-commons cc-by licensed and easy to fork and participate, because it's on github. And yes, i need a logo

The federation new design is live!

Hey everyone! My work on the-federation website redesign is done. It's the first step to offer a better vision of our beloved social network. It was a pleasure to work with @Jason Robinson on this project. If you find any bug please report it on github.

This new website brings new features, including a responsive design, a page for each project ( #diaspora, #friendica and #hubzilla) and for each node! This means you now have a list of nodes for each project, and charts for project (like users, posts... only for diaspora* for example). You also have new charts with interesting ratios, and (very) improved performance (no more freeze for you, #firefox).

Among the new features you can expect in future improvements will be versions information (how many pods, how many users are up-to-date). If you have any feedback please share!

Aktion: Werbeverbot ins Schulgesetz! | LobbyControlhttps://www.lobbycontrol.de/2017/03/werbeverbot-ins-schulgesetz/

Aktion: Werbeverbot ins Schulgesetz!
