A new UX 6 years in the making

F-Droid has been a part of the Android ecosystem for over 6 years now. Since then, over 2000 apps have been built for the main repository, many great features have been added , the client has been translated into over 40 different languages, and much more. However, the F-Droid UX has never changed much from the original three tab layout :
This will change with the upcoming release of F-Droid client v0.103. Over the past 6 months, the F-Droid team has been busy redesigning a modern UX which will help bring F-Droid into the present. Some of the big ticket items include:

Screenshots and feature graphics Bulk download and install Ability to translate apps metadata Improved notifications for downloads and pending updates

In addition, we have been redesigning some of the smaller, but equally as important parts of the app, such as better support for visually impaired users who make use of tools such as Talkback, and better support for donating to open source app developers. This has involved extensive design input from UX designers and the community. In addition to the user tests that were conducted early on in the design process, further field tests are currently being conducted to ensure that usability issues with the new design are identified and resolved. Over the coming weeks you will see alpha releases for v0.103. We encourage your feedback and suggestions about how to continually improve the F-Droid client. This is one of the many improvements happening to the broader F-Droid ecosystem in 2017, so keep an eye out for more!

Thanks for your feedback on the previous post regarding app download source. The results are obvious - 100% of votes for F-Droid. Well, we expected a high percentage for F-Droid, but this is very clear.

Image/photo

Based on the results:
  • We won't publish releases of dandelion* signed by our key anymore
  • We will wait for F-Droid to build dandelion* and attach the app signed by them to our GitHub page
  • This way there will be just one signing key used - for you users - this means you can update your dandelion* installation regardless if downloaded from us, or from F-Droid store
  • If you download an *.apk telling a wrong key error at installation, you can be sure it's not done by F-Droid - so don't install
  • In the last versions, there was an "secondlion*" apk attached on our GitHub Release page. This one has a different package id and can be installed beside dandelion*. In future updates this won't serve the only purpose - to just allow a second account - anymore. secondlion* will be our dandelion*-fresh/beta version from now on, signed by us, which can be installed alongside dandelion*.
  • This will affect all future releases - we won't update or change previous releases
  • It's up to you - you can go for the F-Droid release, the faster published secondlion* - or install both
Does this mean the project is dead?Absolutely not.

What if my current installation came from the GitHub page?Just uninstall the app, and install the latest build from F-Droid:https://f-droid.org/repo/com.github.dfa.diaspora_android_12.apk

Who has access to future used signing keys
  • dandelion*: Just F-Droid has access to the key
  • secondlion*: Maintainers (@gsantner, @vanitasvitae)

Support the project

  • Leave us a star on GitHub
  • Provide Translations
  • Send some Bitcoin to keep us motivated - contact us
  • Report or fix bugs, send PR's

The Licensing and Compliance Lab interviews Björn Schießle of Nextcloud — Free Software Foundation — working together for free software

Björn was interviewed by the #FSF on #Nextcloud:
More than 30 years ago Richard Stallman founded the GNU Project to enable people to continue to use their computers without giving up their freedom. Today, Nextcloud tries to do the same, we want to enable people to continue to sync and share their data without losing their freedom and privacy. Providing such a solution based on free software is a challenging but also extremely motivating task.

Perhaps you know that #Nextcloud is taking part at Ladies that FOSS, this weekend in #Berlin. I intended to mentor, now I am missing sick, unfortunately.

In case anyone with some #PHP knowledge and an idea of the Nextcloud code structure wants to step in: awesome! Drop me a line! In worst case, we have still three people there, but this should not be an excuse :) Friday evening would be a mentor meetup for preperation.

We migrated to Nextcloud 10.0.1 – Tech and Me

As the headline says, we migrated to Nextcloud today, mostly because of the above reasons and that we felt that the time was right. Nextcloud has matured very much in just a few months.
There are bugs in the ownCloud tracker that are several years old, and suggestions of enhancements that never happen, it just feels like it kind of died when Nextcloud arrived.

Happy 20th Birthday, KDE!

Dear #KDE Community, I got stuck to your software back in 2006, I believe, when a #Kubuntu installation enriched my first laptop. Since then I got myself part of the wider community, met awesome people like Frank Karlitschek and Jos Poortvliet amongst others at several conferences, and ten years later I am doing free software with those, and on my favorite #Linux desktop, KDE Plasma (although now on #Antergos). Thanks for the awesome software over decades! Cheers to you!
Can you believe it's been 20 years since the KDE (Kool Desktop Environment) was announced on the 14th of October, 1996, by project founder Matthias Ettrich? Well, it has, and today we'd like to say a happy 20th birthday to KDE!

DMUX

Currently I've been working with #CollectiveTyranny to create a #3D derby-style shooter #game in #cplusplus called #DMUX using only #FOSS tools and libraries. All of our assets are #free-culture using only those under licenses such as #CC-BY or #CC-BY-SA. The game itself is licensed with the #GPL and #AGPL licenses (AGPL is used for the server while GPL is used for the client). The source code is available on #Gitlab [link] and it currently compiles just fine on GNU/Linux systems, (at least on #Debian, #Fedora, and #Arch). We're still working on a Windows port, but I wouldn't suppose too many people here would care for too much for that. We don't have the networking set up just yet, but we're working on that now, at which point the game will start to be playable (right now it's just a car that you can drive around).

Feel free to clone and try out what we have so far!

At last! The crowdfund, i‘ve been waiting for my next laptop. I want to buy all, if not, most of my future devices from this company/brand/standard. There goodies are going to be #earth and #freesoftware friendly, made by an #indie . With #ethical design at its heart. #EOMA68 is here: https://www.crowdsupply.com/eoma68/micro-desktop

Whitepaper: with story examples to help illustrate what this means: http://rhombus-tech.net/whitepapers/ecocomputing_07sep2015/

#ilovemyeoma #eomaidea an #eomadevice Had some ideas for devices and added them to the idea page. i like the #projector one and the ravox - #rave boom box- too :) http://rhombus-tech.net/community_ideas/ http://rhombus-tech.net/community_ideas/ravox/ or what about a FOX, a file server box for non-raid file storage or a MOX for a media centre or a camera or a guitar effects box arr heck if i list any more ideas this will become a great big list, just have a look at the wiki page ;)

Tons of info buried on the website: http://rhombus-tech.net

Yea the website isn’t super sparkly, they work as hard as they can and put most of there efforts into the product. if you can help with managing the website, smarting it up,etc then feel free to join the mailing list and get an account on the wiki :) . so don't be dishearten and think failed or struggling project, cus your wrong hes been at it working towards this point for ages. Laying the ground work, developing a standard that is to last for around the next 10years. So its taken his time in getting it right initially but after this crowdfund things can ramp up and speed up :D ill looking forward to the quad core 2x faster new future brain/cpu card and i look forward to getting the tablet, heck even games console too heh :)

Client 0.95 Released

The latest release of the F-Droid Repository Client, version 0.95, is now available. You can download it from the home page or, if you already have an earlier version installed, just update. Main changes since 0.92:

Start porting UI to Material Design, including a new launcher icon Add support for app changelog links, which will appear for apps that have them once the repositories have been updated again Redesign the App Details view with larger icons, expandable description and links with icons Add ability to make F-Droid install itself as a privileged app on /system via root, allowing the use of the system installer Remove the root installer, since the system installer is safer, more stable and now easy to set up with root privileges Speed up and simplify repo update process by streaming the data out of the jar file directly Can now manually add swap repo via “Repositories” screen Using NFC during swap now initiates a proper swap, rather than redirecting to the “Repositories” screen

As usual, if you have problems or feature requests, please let us know via the issue tracker , join us in the Forum or visit #fdroid on FreeNode.
