A new UX 6 years in the making

F-Droid has been a part of the Android ecosystem for over 6 years now. Since then, over 2000 apps have been built for the main repository, many great features have been added , the client has been translated into over 40 different languages, and much more. However, the F-Droid UX has never changed much from the original three tab layout :
This will change with the upcoming release of F-Droid client v0.103. Over the past 6 months, the F-Droid team has been busy redesigning a modern UX which will help bring F-Droid into the present. Some of the big ticket items include:

Screenshots and feature graphics Bulk download and install Ability to translate apps metadata Improved notifications for downloads and pending updates

In addition, we have been redesigning some of the smaller, but equally as important parts of the app, such as better support for visually impaired users who make use of tools such as Talkback, and better support for donating to open source app developers. This has involved extensive design input from UX designers and the community. In addition to the user tests that were conducted early on in the design process, further field tests are currently being conducted to ensure that usability issues with the new design are identified and resolved. Over the coming weeks you will see alpha releases for v0.103. We encourage your feedback and suggestions about how to continually improve the F-Droid client. This is one of the many improvements happening to the broader F-Droid ecosystem in 2017, so keep an eye out for more!

Halium is an Open Source Project Working Towards a Common Base for Non-Android Mobile Operating Systems

If you are an Android enthusiast who has also explored beyond the world of purely Android-based custom ROMs, you have probably heard of projects such as Ubuntu Touch, Sailfish OS, and the like.

Sounds really interesting, some people want to work on a new Android ROM with a focus on privacy and software freedom. Especially, I like the idea of having a custom ROM which comes with build in microG support.

Please help them by participating in their survey https://form.responster.com/qVIgex

turned on #Android support on #JollaC due to #HereMaps (released July 28 in #Jolla store), decided to try other recent Android apps as well, such as #PokemonGO and #Prisma. all work pretty well, comparable to my #OnePlus2. and Prisma can turn the less-than-stellar pics from Jolla C into works of art ;)

Diaspora Native WebApp Update 1.5.1

Hello folks!

I have just published an update (it might take a couple of hours to be availabe) with the folllowing changes:
  • Now the "back" button only goes back in the browsing history. Previously it also called the "exit app" function when you were on the main stream. The problem with that was that when you were, for example, in a second or third "page" of the (mobile version of the) main stream, you had no way of going back to the previous page, because the exit confirmation dialog was called.
  • The "Exit App" option from the menu will be displayed in the ActionBar whenever there is room available (so that people don't freak out when they see that they can no longer exit the app by pressing the "back" button).
  • Fixed a few unescaped characters in the FR translation.
  • Removed the warning shown when using mobile Internet because it was a little anoying.
If you like this app, please consider leaving a 5 star rating and review on Google Play, share it with your friends or make a small donation on the link below. I would really appreciate it.

F-Droid (unofficial)

Client 0.95 Released

The latest release of the F-Droid Repository Client, version 0.95, is now available. You can download it from the home page or, if you already have an earlier version installed, just update. Main changes since 0.92:

Start porting UI to Material Design, including a new launcher icon Add support for app changelog links, which will appear for apps that have them once the repositories have been updated again Redesign the App Details view with larger icons, expandable description and links with icons Add ability to make F-Droid install itself as a privileged app on /system via root, allowing the use of the system installer Remove the root installer, since the system installer is safer, more stable and now easy to set up with root privileges Speed up and simplify repo update process by streaming the data out of the jar file directly Can now manually add swap repo via “Repositories” screen Using NFC during swap now initiates a proper swap, rather than redirecting to the “Repositories” screen

As usual, if you have problems or feature requests, please let us know via the issue tracker , join us in the Forum or visit #fdroid on FreeNode.

@Jolla enabled official app store for ported devices running their operating system Sailfish OS. Currently #Android #smartphones like #Nexus 4, #Nexus 5 and #Xperia #Pro are running #SailfishOS pretty nicely, lot's of other devices are under work.

If you have an Android phone laying around, and some #Linux skills on device/system level, go on and join the porters. Start with reading #Jolla's HADK documentation, and visit #IRC channel sailfishos-porters to get any advice while you go. They are most helpful there!

I wrote a ste-by-step for XPeria Pro, and for other devices (>20 phones or tablets under work) already ported you can visit this merproject wiki

Hope to see this operating system running all over! The #UI has reached quite a positive word out there at least. Sailfish OS was delivered to audience 2013 running on Jolla Phone. After 14 update releases, Sailfish OS 2.0 is expected to be delivered in few weeks on Jolla Tablet. Jolla has shared that they are announcing the scale of open sourcing plans in close future, aiming to maximize #OpenSource excluding only commercial parts (proprietary device drivers, certain software bought from partners like Myriad, etc...) Looking forward to share this scale to you later.

By the way, Diaspora rocks :) some of you might know what I mean... looking forward for the #API and after that a #SailfishOS #Diaspora #app. Thanks for reading!

Mail client for Android
Which mail client do you use on your #Android? It must handle two #IMAP servers and should handle offline mail somehow because I don't have WLAN connection all the time, but want to read and write mails also without connection. I tried K-9 Mail for some weeks now, but I have already lost so many mails. Sometimes drafts are not stored, sometimes sent messages do not appear anywhere. They get delivered, but will not appear anywhere in my folders. The bad thing about it is that it is totally unreliable. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
Looking forward to the mail client on the #Vivaldi. ;-)
