One significant way Mastodon and the Fediverse have transformed digital culture is through the use of alt text. When I look back at my older images online and in my blogs, I rarely included alt text - even though I actively work on accessibility. For some reason, I simply overlooked it.

Now, every time I post something online, I take a moment to write alt text. Mastodon has changed my mindset, and I believe its impact extends far beyond this. The Fediverse encourages a level of consideration for others that no other social networking platform has before.

Bluesky users often forget that nothing prevents it from following the same path as Meta, Google, or X. All these major players started with an open-source, user-centric approach - look at them now.

A VC-funded company doesn't run on good intentions alone. Where will Bluesky be in a decade? We can only guess, but based on social media history, there are two highly likely outcomes:

1. The platform grows, attracts more users, and inevitably shifts toward monetization - introducing ads, engagement-boosting tactics, and other profit-driven features. In other words: enshittification.
2. The service shuts down or gets sold to another company.

Bluesky's fate remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: protocols are meaningless if they aren't fully open and widely adopted from the very start.

For some, joining Mastodon might seem risky because "the server could shut down at any time" or because it's managed by a single administrator. While these concerns are understandable, Mastodon has far more safeguards in place compared to centralized platforms:

1. Admins are typically experienced sysadmins with a strong passion for server management.

2. It's generally recommended to have multiple admins (we have four).

3. Many servers have financial plans in place, such as donation systems. We have my company backing things up.

4. Infrastructure is often cost-effective, keeping operating costs low.

A few additional points to consider:

1. No server - or anything in life - is immortal. That's exactly why I chose the name mementomori.social (the stoic phrase "memento mori" means "remember death").

2. Web services come and go, but longevity is possible. My first website has been online continuously for 27 years (since 1998). While I've migrated servers a few times, the site itself has never gone offline. It will most likely happen after I pass away, but I hope my descendants keep it online.

Unlike centralized platforms - especially newer ones - that rely on user growth and profitability, investors can pull the plug at any time.

The decentralized Fediverse operates differently: sysadmins are committed to keeping their servers online and do so out of dedication, not for monetary gain.

I don't think we need billions of people here. I already have all the content I need, and no one can keep up with everything anyway. The idea that social media requires a 'critical mass' is just another false narrative pushed by commercial social media corporations and their users.

I'm happy for everyone who joins the Fediverse, but for me, the value of the Social Web lies in other things - not in sheer numbers.

Ich selber kann schwer nachvollziehen, ob Jason Koebler mit seiner Kritik am Fediverse richtig liegt. Ich habe jedenfalls keine Probleme meinen Feed mit interessanten Beiträgen zu füllen.

Mastodon und ActivityPub weisen immer noch einen stark überhöhten Anteil an Leuten auf, die über Technik und nerdige Internetthemen (liebevoll ausgedrückt) sprechen, und es ist schwer, aktive Diskussionen über beispielsweise Sport, Popkultur, Prominente usw. zu finden.

Trotzdem, ein stellt der Artikel einen sehr interessanten Vergleich zwischen dem Fediverse und Bluesky an.

Just starting to wrap my head around the Fediverse and ActivityPub (and I like what I'm learning and discovering), but now here comes Nostr. For a regular user who has no deep technical knowledge, I can only hope they're interoperable. I think people will reach the fatigue of constantly setting up shop on every new technology that comes up.

To me the ultimate interoperability is if we could move around with our content (not just the follow lists). That kind of portability and freedom. Is that even possible? Too much to ask?

This week I won’t be able to publish a new article for my series #TheFutureIsFederated – I’m traveling with family, moving on to a new location and I won’t have the luxury of grandparents helping out with my toddler 🥲

1932 brachte Smith, Kline & French Amphetamin­sulfat unter dem Namen Benzedrine auf den US-amerikanischen Markt. Es wurde in Form eines Inhalators zur Weitung der Bronchien bei Atemwegserkrankungen wie Asthma genutzt. In Deutschland wurde das Mittel als Benzedrin vertrieben.
1935 wurde die stimulierende Wirkung erkannt und zur Behandlung von Narkolepsie genutzt.
[10]1937 verabreichte der Psychiater Charles Bradley in einer Studie Benzedrin an verhaltensauffällige Kinder, deren Symptome sich daraufhin besserten.[11] Er wiederholte die Studie im Jahr 1941. Bradleys Studien gelten als Meilenstein der Psychopharmakotherapie bei Kindern.
[12]1938 brachten die Berliner Temmler-Werke Methamphetamin unter dem Markennamen Pervitin auf den Markt, das bis 1988 hergestellt wurde.
Bis Ende der 1930er Jahre fand Amphetamin Verbreitung und wurde in einer Vielzahl von Einsatzgebieten verschrieben: etwa als Appetithemmer, gegen Erkältungen, bei Narkolepsie, Depressionen, Schwangerschaftserbrechen und nach übermäßigem Alkoholkonsum („Kater“). Zu dieser Zeit gab es Kombipräparate (z. B. Dexamyl), die neben Amphetamin ein starkes Beruhigungsmittel (meistens Barbiturate) gegen dessen Nebenwirkungen enthielten. Solche Kombinationen werden heute als wenig sinnvoll und riskant angesehen.[13]
[14]Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurden Amphetaminderivate in den Armeen Deutschlands (Methamphetamin, Pervitin), der Vereinigten Staaten (D,L-Amphetamin, Benzedrin), Großbritanniens und Japans eingesetzt, um bei den Soldaten die Wachsamkeit, Ausdauer und Stimmung zu heben.
[14]1941 wurde es in Deutschland aufgrund sich häufenden Missbrauchs und Suchtfällen dem Reichsopiumgesetz unterstellt, wodurch der Verkehr mit dem Stoff reglementiert wurde.
1948 brachte Glaxo-Wellcome in den USA Dexedrine (reines Dexamphetamin) als Mittel gegen ADHS auf den Markt.

In den 1950er Jahren erreichten der Gebrauch und Missbrauch von Stimulanzien in Japan enorme Ausmaße, 1954 waren 0,7 % der Bevölkerung chronische Nutzer und 2,5 % ehemalige Konsumenten.[15] In Europa (dort vor allem in Schweden) und den USA nahm der Stimulanzienmissbrauch ebenfalls zu.
1959 gab es erste Berichte über Konsumenten in den USA, die sich den Inhalt der Benzedrine-Inhalatoren spritzten, daraufhin wurden zur Injektion missbrauchbare Inhalatoren vom Markt genommen. Erste Fälle von illegal produziertem Amphetamin wurden bekannt.
1970 wurde Amphetamin in den Vereinigten Staaten in Schedule II des Controlled Substances Act aufgenommen, somit wurden Handel, Besitz und Herstellung ohne Genehmigung strafbar; durch einen Arzt ist es weiterhin verschreibungsfähig.

Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass Gesellschaft und Politik bei Social Media nicht so lange braucht, da dafür noch nicht mal ein Arzt konsultiert werden muss und es für alle Altersgruppen frei und 24 Stunden am Tag unlimitiert verfügbar ist.

Der englische Chemiker Charles Romley Alder Wright untersuchte 1873 die Reaktionen von Alkaloiden wie Morphin mit Essigsäureanhydrid. Zwanzig Jahre später befasste sich der im Bayer-Stammwerk in Elberfeld (Wuppertal-Elberfeld) beschäftigte Chemiker und Pharmazeut Felix Hoffmann mit dieser Reaktion, die direkt zu Diacetylmorphin führte. . Bayer entwickelte hieraus ein Verfahren zur Synthese von Diacetylmorphin und ließ sich dafür am 27. Juni 1898 den Markennamen „Heroin“ schützen.

[8]Heroin wurde in einer Werbekampagne in zwölf Sprachen als ein oral einzunehmendes Schmerz- und Hustenmittel vermarktet. Es wurde außerdem bei etwa 40 weiteren Indikationen angewendet, zum Beispiel bei Bluthochdruck, Lungenerkrankungen, Herzerkrankungen, zur Geburts- und Narkoseeinleitung sowie als „nicht süchtigmachendes Medikament“ gegen die Entzugssymptome von Morphin und Opium. Es wurde angenommen, Heroin habe alle Vorteile von Morphin, aber kaum Nebenwirkungen – zunächst wurden lediglich Verstopfung und leichte sexuelle Lustlosigkeit als solche vermutet. Heroin wurde von vielen Ärzten und Patienten zunächst positiv aufgenommen. Doch 1904 wurde erkannt, dass Heroin noch stärker oder schneller als Morphin abhängig macht und dass Patienten bei wiederholter Einnahme bald eine größere Heroinmenge brauchten, um dessen anfängliche Wirkung erneut zu erzielen. Einige Ärzte warnten, dass Heroin das gleiche Abhängigkeitspotenzial wie Morphin habe; diese Erkenntnis verbreitete sich aber nur langsam. Das lag unter anderem daran, dass die orale Darreichungsform eine relativ langsame Aufnahme des Stoffes bewirkt, wodurch starke Rauschzustände in der Regel ausblieben.

Ab etwa 1910 wurde vor allem in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, wo die Morphin- und Opiumsucht häufiger und in breiteren Schichten vorkam als in Europa, die von der Droge Heroin ausgehende Gefahr erkannt. Als in den USA bekannt wurde, dass geschnupftes und insbesondere intravenös gespritztes Heroin eine weitaus stärkere Wirkung hatte, stiegen viele Opioidabhängige auf die leicht erhältliche Substanz um, die außerdem nebenwirkungsärmer als Morphin war (hinsichtlich Histaminreaktion). Die Zahl der Abhängigen stieg rasch an, so auch unter oftmals stigmatisierten und mit Opiumkonsum in Verbindung gebrachten chinesischen Einwanderern. Zunächst erließen einzelne Bundesstaaten der USA verschiedene Gesetze zwecks Verbot einiger Opioide. Später, auf der ersten Opiumkonferenz 1912, wurde zum ersten Mal ein staatenübergreifendes Verbot diskutiert.

1931 gab Bayer dem politischen Druck nach, stellte die Produktion ein und entfernte Heroin damit aus seiner Produktpalette.

Social Media: An die Leute, die CO2 vermeiden und Energie sparen wollen ... Kleinvieh macht auch Mist.

Das Verbreiten von Bildern und Filmchen, gerade im Fediverse, erzeugt ne Menge CO2 und verbraucht auch eine Menge Energie. Ich will gar nicht darüber philosophieren, dass es vllt 1% der Leute interessiert, die euch abonniert haben, dass ihr eure Beine auf dem Gehweg in Castrop-Rauxel mit eurem Lieblingsschlüsselanhänger fotografiert. Jeder macht sich zum Affen, so gut er kann.

Aber denkt mal drüber nach, ob es wirklich ein Bild sein muss und wenn ja, ob es wirklich in einer hohen Auflösung sein muss. Oder noch bescheuerter: Animierte Gifs zum unterstreichen, dass man sich selbst nicht ordentlich ausdrücken kann. Oder kleine Filmchen, wie man den Kaffeebecher wegstellt.

Denkt einfach mal drüber nach, wie sinnvoll es ist, sinn- und gedankenlos die Umwelt zu verpesten. Ebenso könntet ihr weiterhin den Kühlschrank im Wald entsorgen und den Müll aus dem Fenster schmeißen oder einfach beim Gehen fallen lassen.

Also wenn euch die Nachfolgegenerationen, die Umweltschäden und die Klimapunkte egal sind, dann ignoriert einfach Gedanken über solche Dinge und verhaltet euch weiterhin so destruktiv.

Wenn nicht, dann überdenkt mal jede kleine Sache im Alltag, ob das jetzt wirklich notwendig ist, oder nicht. Manchmal kommt da auch ein Ja bei raus. Aber wichtig ist, dass ihr ehrlich mit euch selbst darüber nachgedacht habt.
