A study by the European Commission concludes that Free Software is a driving force for innovation in Europe:
The argument that established revenue models of the software industry were being eroded by open source software being available for free can no longer be upheld. Instead, there are many examples of successful OSS applications that are generally viewed as innovation drivers. Furthermore, working business models have been developed and have proved to be successful.

Blog post by FSFE's Executive Director @jonaso@diasp.eu :

Policy, why's that?

"... but as Schneier puts it: it's no longer a question of it, it's a question of when. As free and open source software gets into health care, automotive and other safety critical areas, it's getting further into areas of software regulation, and those areas will only expand over time.

To meet this need for regulation, we must ensure regulatory agencies and governments are getting the support and knowledge they need to create good policies and regulation, rather than bad ones.

Advertisement: This is something the FSFE is already doing, but we could use your support to do more."

Policy, why's that?

In November 2016, Bruce Schneier wrote about the need for increased regulation in the software sphere. If we want to secure our increasingly computerized and connected world, we need more government involvement in the security of the "Internet of Things" and increased regulation of what are now critical and life-threatening

Open Labs Albania target elections

Albania will hold parliamentary elections on 18 June 2017. Free software groups have been organising similar campaigns across Europe, with the first being organised by April.org in France in 2007. A European-wide campaign for the European Parliament elections in 2014 was launched by April (France) as well, together with Assoli (Italy), Hispalinux (Spain), LAKA (Latvia) and the international free software groups Edri, FSF and FSFE.

#FSFE Newsletter - March 2017

This Newsletter is available on our website in Deutsch, English, Français and Shqip.

The Chronicles of #LiMux

In February, the news about LiMux shook the world. LiMux, a project run by the city of Munich and completed in 2013, constitutes one of the finest examples of vendor-neutral administration based on Free Software; during its execution phase, 15,000 personal computers and laptops used by public administrations were migrated to Free Software.

In a surprise move, a coalition of parties filed a motion with minimal lead time before the city council, asking for the abolishment of the project and the return into proprietary solutions.

The response by the community was immediate and formidable. FSFE's Deputy Coordinator for Germany, Björn Schießle, describes what followed. An ad-hoc coalition was formed by the FSFE, the Document Foundation, KDE and OSBA, collecting questions around the motion and its related processes. Members of the city council were contacted prior to the public hearing and FSFE supporters in Germany and Austria were invited to engage, contacting politicians on the issue. Media coverage in multiple languages was additionally created.

During the public hearing, participating parties quoted some of our questions, and admitted they had never before received so much input from the public. The result of the hearing was a modified motion passed on February 15, calling the administration to propose a strategy for the unification of the city's client-side IT architecture by the end of 2020, building on a yet-to-be-developed proprietary client and guaranteeing maximal compatibility with the existing solutions.

The FSFE does not claim LiMux has solved all the problems. However, we do claim these problems are mostly of organizational nature, and as such must be disconnected from the technical side. Public infrastructure must remain independent of single software vendors, and invest into common assets, which are provided by Free Software.
Help us grow and make a difference in 2017 https://fsfe.org/join

What else have we done? Inside and Outside the FSFE

  • For #IloveFS, André translated the Free Software song (NL).
  • After last year's successful pre-FOSDEM meeting, the FSFE and #OpenForum Europe continued the tradition of bringing together active Free Software stakeholders during a prior to #FOSDEM public policy related event. This year's meeting offered the opportunity to individual citizens and decision-makers to exchange their views on the basis of practical first-hand information concerning Free Software in public policy.
  • For 16 years, FSFE has been present at FOSDEM with a booth, numerous volunteers and staff. Reinhard Müller, FOSDEM booth coordinator, describes in his report the great atmosphere among the booth volunteers and how an outstanding amount of merchandise and promotional material was distributed during the 2 days of the event.
  • In 2016, Europe welcomed three new umbrella organizations for Free Software (and hardware) projects: Public Software CIC, The Commons Conservancy, and the Center for the Cultivation of Technology. Standing by the needs of the community, the brand-new organizations provide a legal entity for projects to join, with regards to donations, accounting, grants, legal compliance, or even sophisticated governance. These administrative services allow projects to focus on technical and community matters.

Hey! We are happy to announce that Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) starts to use Diaspora more actively. We will forward all our News and posts from other social networks to Diaspora. But we will also actively share content and are happy to engage with people at Diaspora.

Here you can learn more about FSFE. We are charity that empowers users to control technology. Software is deeply involved in all aspects of our lives; and it is important that this technology empowers rather than restricts us. Free Software gives everybody the rights to use, understand, adapt and share software. These rights help support other fundamental freedoms like freedom of speech, press and privacy.

#dandelion announcement

GitHub | Translate (posted by @gsantner)

Thanks for your feedback on the previous post regarding app download source. The results are obvious - 100% of votes for F-Droid. Well, we expected a high percentage for F-Droid, but this is very clear.

Image/photo

Based on the results:
  • We won't publish releases of dandelion* signed by our key anymore
  • We will wait for F-Droid to build dandelion* and attach the app signed by them to our GitHub page
  • This way there will be just one signing key used - for you users - this means you can update your dandelion* installation regardless if downloaded from us, or from F-Droid store
  • If you download an *.apk telling a wrong key error at installation, you can be sure it's not done by F-Droid - so don't install
  • In the last versions, there was an "secondlion*" apk attached on our GitHub Release page. This one has a different package id and can be installed beside dandelion*. In future updates this won't serve the only purpose - to just allow a second account - anymore. secondlion* will be our dandelion*-fresh/beta version from now on, signed by us, which can be installed alongside dandelion*.
  • This will affect all future releases - we won't update or change previous releases
  • It's up to you - you can go for the F-Droid release, the faster published secondlion* - or install both
Does this mean the project is dead?Absolutely not.

What if my current installation came from the GitHub page?Just uninstall the app, and install the latest build from F-Droid:https://f-droid.org/repo/com.github.dfa.diaspora_android_12.apk

Metal Free Software Song 2: This Time It's Personal - Jono Bacon

Many moons ago, when computers were made out of oak and beige slacks, I recorded a heavy metal version of the Free Software Song that Richard Stallman cobbled together. When I recorded this song I didnt really have the right equipment to record a song, and consequently it sounded a bit rubbish. Richard and I …

Sounds really interesting, some people want to work on a new Android ROM with a focus on privacy and software freedom. Especially, I like the idea of having a custom ROM which comes with build in microG support.

Please help them by participating in their survey https://form.responster.com/qVIgex

What is a Free Software conpany? Does it exists at all? How do we measure the contributions to Free Software? What are the negative effects of proprietary activities and when does they predominate the positive effects of the Free Software activities? Interesting discussions during this year general assembly. What's your opinion?

There is no Free Software company - But!

Since the start of the FSFE 15 years ago, the people involved were certain that companies are a crucial part to reach our goal of software freedom. For many years we have explained to companies – IT as well as non-IT – what benefits they have from Free Software. We encourage individuals and companie...

Free Software is a real feature & everybody deserves it, not only home users! This is a good reason to switch from #ownCloud to #Nextcloud like the Danish research and education network https://nextcloud.com/blog/the-danish-research-and-education-network-moves-from-owncloud-to-nextcloud/ #FreeSoftware #OpenSource #Enterprise

The Danish research and education network moves from ownCloud to Nextcloud | Nextcloud

Nextcloud is an open source, self-hosted file sync and share and communication app platform. Access & sync your files, contacts, calendars & communicate and collaborate across your devices. You decide what happens with your data, where it is and who can access it!

“what happened in 2013 would not have been possible without free software. I did not use Windows machines when I was in my operational phase because I couldn't trust them. Not because I knew that there was a particular backdoor or anything like that but because I couldn't be sure.” - Edward Snowden, LibrePlanet 2016 #freedom #politics #freesoftware #surveillance #snowden
