A new UX 6 years in the making

F-Droid has been a part of the Android ecosystem for over 6 years now. Since then, over 2000 apps have been built for the main repository, many great features have been added , the client has been translated into over 40 different languages, and much more. However, the F-Droid UX has never changed much from the original three tab layout :
This will change with the upcoming release of F-Droid client v0.103. Over the past 6 months, the F-Droid team has been busy redesigning a modern UX which will help bring F-Droid into the present. Some of the big ticket items include:

Screenshots and feature graphics Bulk download and install Ability to translate apps metadata Improved notifications for downloads and pending updates

In addition, we have been redesigning some of the smaller, but equally as important parts of the app, such as better support for visually impaired users who make use of tools such as Talkback, and better support for donating to open source app developers. This has involved extensive design input from UX designers and the community. In addition to the user tests that were conducted early on in the design process, further field tests are currently being conducted to ensure that usability issues with the new design are identified and resolved. Over the coming weeks you will see alpha releases for v0.103. We encourage your feedback and suggestions about how to continually improve the F-Droid client. This is one of the many improvements happening to the broader F-Droid ecosystem in 2017, so keep an eye out for more!

the android sdk methods look just way too complicated to me
and the requirent to use enormopus and frustratingly slow ide's make it pretty much unusable.

but if you can find an android device that you can have root on (these days that seems to hard here in AU),
the maybe debiankit might be worth looking at?

its basically debian in android and you can install things with apt-get,etc too

not sure if you can compile full android apps with it, and probably not if you want to distribute binaries,
and I still haven't figured out if theres a way for linux software to use the screen on the device without needing to do that via a vnc app. (though I can use X via vnc to see the debian desktop running on it)

that worked for a minipc where I have root.

but to find a phone or tablet locally where I can have root seems nearly impossible

locally is a MUST becaese I refuse to use credit cards for payment - that was always crazy and unsafe and these days with pretty much ALL hardware looking so unsafe and opaque to the user I can't trust any of it with credit card info.

Yes, just install Android Studio and import the project. Then become a developer on the phone (tab 7 times on the build number in about) and in the then available developer settings enable ADB over USB. From there on it should be pretty much plug'n'play.

this might be better updated, even if it isn't specific to Debian: https://developer.android.com/studio/run/index.html

I noticed you didn't tag this as Android, so you might want to repost with that tagged.

I am not a programmer but I have a #programming #Question:

How easy is it to compile Android Apps from source?

My kids are having fun learning capitals of countries recently. I remembered Quizzn which is nice for this, but the English names are often much different than German, so I want to just translate the CSV with wordpairs and compile the app again. That's it. I have no motivation to start programming Android apps and invest weeks of time to get there.

I am not a programmer. Being a #Debian user, I found AndroidTools in the wiki. This document is full of things I don't understand. Following it would entail a lot of guess work for me which minimizes the chance of succeeding.

Are you aware of any better tutorials? Or can you tell me if Quizz is below or above android-sdk-platform-23?

I welcome any hint, even "forget it!" :)

xenotropic/quizzn

quizzn - This is an open-source quiz application. The current dataset is for world capitals, but it can also be easily adapted to work with language vocabulary learning as well.

@Carol Chen in regards to the camera. SailfishOS will be using the AOSP drivers I assume. They tend to be far more limited than the drivers Sony uses with their Android ROMs and drm. So it will be one of the best cameras for SailfishOS users. But it won't take as good photos and videos as the Sony Android version of the phone.

I expect non working prediction autofocus and no 5 axis image stabilization via software. Those are some highlight features however for those.

Thanks for your feedback on the previous post regarding app download source. The results are obvious - 100% of votes for F-Droid. Well, we expected a high percentage for F-Droid, but this is very clear.

Image/photo

Based on the results:
  • We won't publish releases of dandelion* signed by our key anymore
  • We will wait for F-Droid to build dandelion* and attach the app signed by them to our GitHub page
  • This way there will be just one signing key used - for you users - this means you can update your dandelion* installation regardless if downloaded from us, or from F-Droid store
  • If you download an *.apk telling a wrong key error at installation, you can be sure it's not done by F-Droid - so don't install
  • In the last versions, there was an "secondlion*" apk attached on our GitHub Release page. This one has a different package id and can be installed beside dandelion*. In future updates this won't serve the only purpose - to just allow a second account - anymore. secondlion* will be our dandelion*-fresh/beta version from now on, signed by us, which can be installed alongside dandelion*.
  • This will affect all future releases - we won't update or change previous releases
  • It's up to you - you can go for the F-Droid release, the faster published secondlion* - or install both
Does this mean the project is dead?Absolutely not.

What if my current installation came from the GitHub page?Just uninstall the app, and install the latest build from F-Droid:https://f-droid.org/repo/com.github.dfa.diaspora_android_12.apk

Who has access to future used signing keys
  • dandelion*: Just F-Droid has access to the key
  • secondlion*: Maintainers (@gsantner, @vanitasvitae)

Support the project

  • Leave us a star on GitHub
  • Provide Translations
  • Send some Bitcoin to keep us motivated - contact us
  • Report or fix bugs, send PR's

Sounds really interesting, some people want to work on a new Android ROM with a focus on privacy and software freedom. Especially, I like the idea of having a custom ROM which comes with build in microG support.

main reason for leaving sailfish was lack of good enough camera, sportstracker hrm incompability (android) and whatsapp/signal app being flakey. perhaps the camera at least would be good enough here with nexus 5x. (xperia z5 compact became my jolla successor).

Warning: Allwinner kernels have a backdoor!

If you're running an Allwinner SoC based computer (Cubieboard, Cubietruck, OrangePi, BananaPi or OlinuXino for example) you may gain root access easily with a simple echo command. Try the following command to check if you become root:
echo "rootmydevice" > /proc/sunxi_debug/sunxi_debug
You can check with the "id" command if you're root after running the command above. If so, you should switch to another kernel that doesn't have that backdoor.

For server systems you may use the mainline linux kernel if the Allwinner SoC on your computer is well enough supported. The Cubietruck will run fine with a mainline kernel and mainline U-boot when you're using it as a headless server. I tried to gain root access with the command above on a self-built mainline kernel and it doesn't work since /proc/sunxi_debug doesn't exist. You're probably safe when using the mainline kernel.

I love Free Software Day 2016

https://fsfe.org/campaigns/ilovefs/2016/

on my pc, on my phone, on my laptop, at home or at work: every single software i use is a free software The only non free os i use is android, waiting for ubuntu touch. No troubles, no worries, i take care of my privacy. My children and family use also mostly free software. I'm also organizing install parties to help ordinary people to understand, choose and use free software. The road is long but the goal is clear and the travel joyful.
